Overloads Mode: Wave Game Welsh Way Principles

Understand when and how to exploit a numerical advantage against the opposition.

Organisation / Area Size Area size is 36m x 44 (2 x 18 Yard boxes).

Explanation: Red 1 will receive a ball from the coach and go into a 1v1 with the blue GK. Then the blue team are then given a ball and are 2 v 1 towards the goal to the left. As soon as the ball goes dead a 3rd ball is fed in (Red) to create a 3v2 in the opposite direction left to right. The original Red defender becomes one of the 3 attackers. When the ball dies the coach feeds in a final ball to the blues who are in a 4v3 attacking the goal on the left

How: The coach / tutor is to work with ONE team only, in this case the blues on how the exploit the reds (2v1 and 4v3 are the focus overloads) and utilise the numerical advantage. If the opposition, the reds in this case, win possession back at anytime they can drive into the opposite goal within a managed countdown but MUST return to their own half immediately. They will carry on the focus of the practice which is creating and exploiting overloads in their favour but not be coached.

Coach 1: Work with the blues to create / exploit the overload / opposition & maintain realism when the blues are defending

Coach 2: Maintain realism of the reds when they attack, ensure defensive realism when they are out of possession Swap roles at ten minutes Tutors to speak to the players terminally at half time / Q&A / utilising different coaching styles

In Possession

Confidence to take the ball

Clear decision making to play the ball through, around and over.

Move the ball quickly and find the spare player

Create and exploit scoring opportunities

Challenges, Conditions & Targets Be brave with the overload / numerical advantage and encourage the players to be creative in how the manipulate the defensive players. Encourage creativity in 1v1s and the 2v1 / 3v2 / 4v3. Challenge the players to come up with the solutions to how the beat the defensive players whilst guiding them via different intervention strategies. Potentially limit the players touches / time on the ball especially in the attacking half. You may as the coach want to manage a countdown to make the practice as realistic as possible especially if the opposition are getting success regularly and eating into your coaching time. The coach is to encourage players to stay 'onside' in the attacking half
