Specific Session (10 mins)

Topic: Specific Practice-Defending the Switch from the Midfield to the Final Third

Framing: The attacking team will set up in a 4-3-3, and the back line will be removed. The defending team will set up in a 1-4-2-3-1, and the wide midfielders, attacking midfielder, and striker will be removed.

Challenges, Conditions or Targets:The attacking team's deepest midfielder will look to connect with one of the attacking midfielders. Then, they will aim to pass to the opposite midfielder, who will attempt to switch play to the opposite winger. The attacking wingers will aim to deliver crosses into the box for the striker to finish.

The defending team must move and adjust according to the direction of the ball, staying proactive. When the ball is played to the attacking team's midfielders, the defending team will look to step up and apply pressure. Once possession is recovered, the defending team will aim to score in the mini goals.

What if:

  • The attacking team's defensive midfielder plays the ball out wide to the winger, creating space in the middle as the defending team shifts. In this case, the defending team’s full-backs should press quickly to deny full control of the ball and prevent the ball from being played back into the middle for a combination pass or switch.

  • The attacking team’s striker drops deeper to receive the ball from the defensive midfielder, with the intention to switch play to one of the wingers. The defending team’s center-back should accelerate to intercept the pass, deny any change of angle, and push the team up to close the space in the middle, making it harder for the attacking team to play through.
