Specific Session - Breaking Lines - In Possession (20 mins)20 mins

Specific Practice/Breaking Lines(In Possession)/Welsh Way Principles Understand when and how to playthrough, around or over based on the pressure applied by the opposition.

Organisation/Area Size:3rd of a full-sized pitch (can be adjusted slightly depending on the quality of players).Extra balls placed on the side of the playing area.2 Big Goals.2 teams yellow (defending team) and blue (attacking team). Both teams playing in a 1-3-5-2 missing their wingbacks.4x4 minute blocks with 1 minute break in-between each block. Red lines (use flat markers) indicates playing zones (3).White lines (flat markers or cones).

Explanation: The objective of the yellow team which the coach is managing, is to defend the lines using the Welsh Way principles of staying compact and narrow, avoid split passes, force the opposition wide, protect the space in behind. The objective of the blue team, which the coach is working with, is to try and playthrough, around or over the opposition to score (break lines) by moving the ball quickly. The pitch is narrowed down to bring the topic to life and the zones are divided to focus on the separate units as well as the team as a whole and how they can link together.

How: The coach will work with the blue team and manage the yellow team. The coach is to focus on the team as a whole but also focusing on the different units which is divided into 3 zones in order for players to understand (pitch geography). The coach will do this by breaking the session into 4 separate blocks .Block 1 - Players are limited in staying in their zone. Blues are trying to break lines while the yellows are to work together in stopping this from happening. If yellows win the ball, they need to make quick decisions to play forward and score. Block 2 - Players can support and move into different zones making it difficult and challenging for the defending team. If a player from the middle zone runs up to support in the final zone then the players in the last zone need to push up and fill up the gaps into the middle zone to support the attack. Block 3 - Blue team are limited to 3 touch to move the ball quickly to break lines. Yellow team is to score within 10 seconds in order for the blue team to have the ball more for the coach to focus on the attacking team. Block 4 - Create a scenario, Yellow team is winning the game and blue team need to score before the time is up.

Challenges, Conditions or Targets :Limit number of touches for the blue team. Yellow team to score within a number of seconds. Players are conditioned to their playing zone (before progressions).Targets are to score in the big goals for both teams. If the blue team plays through the yellows and scores award 2 goals. Challenge the blue team to break lines by dribbling if they cannot break lines with a pass.

Key Coaching Points :In Possession :Make the pitch big. Movement off the ball. Quick and quality of the pass. Limited touches. Angles of receiving the ball to play forward. Body position. Out of Possession: Defend narrow and compact .Avoid split passes. Force opposition wide. Protect the space in behind. Apply pressure on the ball when locked the opposition one side. Ensure communication between the different units.

Small-Sided-Game (20 mins)20 mins

Small-Sided-Game/Breaking Lines/(In Possession)/Welsh Way Principles Understand when and how to playthrough, around or over based on the pressure applied by the opposition.

Organisation/Area Size: Remove the zones which was marked by flat markers. Area size stays the same. Players and formations stay the same.

Explanation: Normal game with a few challenges and conditions. No corners but play throw-ins. Ball restarts with either goalkeeper. The coach is to continue to work with the attacking team and observe. Allow more ball rolling time for players to demonstrate their learning from the specific practice.

How: The coach is to challenge the blue team to move the ball quickly by limiting the number of touches. The blue team is to make the pitch as big as possible by creating width and depth to cause problems for the defending team. The coach will manage the yellow team and ensure they are defending compact and narrow by protecting the middle of the playing area. The coach will intervene when the opportunity arrises to demonstrate and use Q&A to understand what the players have learnt and express their ideas.

Challenges, Conditions or Targets: Challenge the blue team to 3 touches to move the ball quickly. Challenge the yellow team to score within 10 seconds of gaining possession of the ball (extra goal awarded if scored within the timeframe).Encourage the blue team to playthrough, around and over the opposition (can award an extra goal if scored a goal by doing so).Yellows to defend narrow and compact, forcing the opposition one side and then applying pressure to win the ball. Create a scenario within the last few minutes of the game where yellows are winning 2-0. This will increase the intensity from the blue team and will create decision making, more creativity and challenge the yellows .If a player cannot pass to break lines (can the player dribble through to break lines of the defending team).

Key Coaching Points: In Possession: Make the pitch big. Move the ball quickly. Play through, around or over the opposition. Limit the number of touches. Create width and depth. Create triangles to break lines. Body position when receiving the ball (receive to play forward).Out of Possession: Defend narrow and compact.  Avoid split passes .Protect the middle. Force the opposition wide. Leave the furthest player. Defend as a unit (space between the units).Pressure on the ball once locked opposition one side. Break passing lines when gaining possession (look to play forward when regaining possession of the ball).
