Objective of Game: look and see where to create and use space in order to move the ball to your teammate.
Topic: Create and Use Space
Phase: Attack - Build Up
Problem: We have to get the ball out of our defending third
Who: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
Where: Defending third
When: a) the goalie retrieves the ball b) we gain possession
What: a) players quickly moves away from ball into open space with open hips. b) diagonal ball played to back foot (either pass or goalie from near the top of box rolls the ball ) c) drive if space is open going forward d) player then connects upfield to the backfoot of a teammate.
Why: Move the ball from defending third to middle third.
Layout: Start with 8x8 grid and progress once attackers connect 20 straight passes. Move to 6x6
Restrictions: Defender defends for each cycle. 1 minute on 1 minute rest; 8 cycles; then 75 seconds on 1 minute rest. 8 cycles
Scoring: Number of connected passes per minute for first 8 cycles. Connect 10 passes get 5 points for second 8 cycles.
Coaching Points:
Cognitive: 1. Be alert, scanning constantly, as you are always in play. (perception) 2. Constantly think about where you need to be to create space and play the ball. (conception) 3. Make a decsion where to play the ball. 4. Devise a move to decieve the defender, if needed. 5. Play the ball (execution) 6. Assses
Technical: 1. Keep your hips open to the center to be able to play any option. (receiving) 2. Use both feet staying balanced on the balls of your feet. (ball control) 3. Make subtle changes in your positioning to create angles and keep passing lanes open. (positioning) 4. Pass to back foot. (passing) 5. Receive across your body. 6. Be courageous and look for the split pass when available. (ambition)
