Description

Organisation (Practice Layout & Transition)

11v11 Context:
This practice focuses on breaking lines in buildup play in a 4-3-3 (Reds) formation vs a 4-2-3-1 (Blues) formation, where the opposition wingers press Out-to-In. To ensure the numbers stay within the team training limit, the wingers (#7/11) of the build-up play team be taken out and consequently both FBs (#2/5) out of the blue back 4 are taken out (leaving only 2 blue CBs against a Red #9.

Organization:
The pitch is played from the touchline of one half to 10 yards.
passed the edge of the halfway circle into the other half. This pitch geography is best suited for the objective of the session (Build up vs a high press) as it ensures that the reds are building out in the areas, they would in a 11v11 game.
Work/Rest ratio: Play 4/ Rest 2 (Reason for shorter block and longer rest compared to other team trainings is to allow the blues to recover as I want the pressing intensity to be high)

Condition:
-
Blues have 8 seconds to score when they regain possession.

Coaching Points:
Playing Through:
-
When one of the CB's (#3/4) have the ball, the nearside #8/10 should run away from the #3/4 on the ball, this will create a problem for the blue #6/8:
-
Do I stay where I am and let the Red #8/10 be free? = Play into Red #8/10
-
Do I follow the red #8/10? = that will be the trigger for the Red #9 to drop and for the #3/4 to play into the #9 dropping in
Play around:
-
If the Blue #7/11 screens the pass centrally into the nearside #8/10 who ran away, the nearside #2/5 will be asked to push up to the same height as the opposition #7/11 to provide an option to play around so that the Red #2/5 can break the #7/11's line with a 1st touch)
Play Over:
-
If all passing options close by are cut off, play over into the #9 or the far side #2/5 (to switch the point of attack)
-
If they choose to go over into the #9, the red midfielders will be coached to turn and support the #9 to contest for 2nd Balls.

Challenges:
-
Can you make movements away from the ball to force the blue midfielders to decide? Do they follow you and leave pass open into #9? or do they stay and let you be free? (to red #8/10)
-
Can you be brave, and punch passes through to your #8/10's or #9 (to red #3/4)
-
Can you always be an option to play through or pull a blue #3/4 short to then spin in behind? (to red #9)
