Match Prep (20 mins)

Set Up:

  • 3/4 Pitch - Goal on the 18 yard line
  • 22 Players
  • RED Coached set up in a 352
  • BLUE Opposition set up in a 352

Session Explained:

BLUE are aiming to build from the back, play through the lines and looking to advance over the white line to score in the goal. Only the RED CBs can defend behind the white line, once that line has been broken by the BLUE they have 10 seconds to score in the RED goal.

RED aiming to win the ball back and score in the BLUE goal.

Blocks:

2 min Framing

3x8 min (2min rest between)

BLUE PROBLEMS:

  • RED have a 4v2 overload at the top of the pitch, meaning easy possession when they build up the play - meaning BLUE may have to drop off.
RED SOLUTIONS:
  • Set a trap by one of the CF starting wide to prevent the ball going to CB - and other striker starting centrally - allowing ball to be played out to oneside
  • Ball side striker then presses from in to out - aiming to keep play one way
  • Second striker closes in towards Gk and middle CB to stop any attempted switch of play
  • Ball side wing back starts to lock onto opposition wingback
  • Near side CB can mark tight/in front - middle CB is around and deeper to cover in behind
  • Ball side CM slides across, as does far side CM, and Far side Wing back narrows up inside the pitch to close spaces and get near to threaten opposition CM

Problem 2 (10 mins)

BLUE PROBLEM

  • Blue wingbacks go deeper and CF play much wider, they have also pushed on a CM to play as a 10/False 9 - stretching ourour Back 3 - creating big spaces in front of our back 3 and behind ourmidfield and wingback line - potentially allowing easy passes into CF feet to hold up ball

RED SOLUTION:

  • Same strategy with the CF setting the trap and pressing this time the ball side CM has to shuffle over to screen the pass into theCF feet.
  • The Wide CB can't go in front - because themiddle CB can't cover in behind due to the gaps in the pitch being sobig
Second CM comes across - and far side WB narrows up tomark far side CM
we must keep play down this side of the pitch
