Defending Goal-kicks

  • Allow the keeper to play the ball out from the back.
  • Force the ball to one side.
  • The centre forward cuts the ball off back to the middle.
  • The right winger blocks the pass from their LCB to their centre forward's feet.
  • Our right back then presses their wing-back when they receive the ball.
  • Our left back tucks across and keeps our centre back as a spare player.
  • Our left winger is tucked over so when we win the ball we can break forward straight away, hit our centre forward's feet and have both wingers in support.
  • The same happens on the opposite side.

Attacking Goal Kicks

  • Our GK starts with the ball in the middle on the edge of the 6-yard box.
  • Our two CBs split to the top corners of the 6-yard box.
  • Our LB and RB start high and wide.
  • Our holding midfielder drops into a space between their two CFs.
  • Our CAM drops to a CM position alongside the other CM.
  • Our two wingers stay high and wide.
  • When the ball gets played from the GK to a CB, our LB and RB stay wide but drop deep. This creates a better passing angle. It also makes their wing-backs have to decide whether to press forward or drop deep.
  • This will now create more space for us out wide.
  • When our LB or RB has the ball they can either dribble forward,  find our winger or find our striker.
  • When we find out winger, this will force their three CBs to slide across to defend, meaning we will have space on the far side. We need to look to switch the ball.
  • Back to the start again, if their CFs cut the passing angle from CB to LB/RB, we can play our CDM.
  • Our CDM can either turn or play the ball out wide to the LB/RB.
  • If our CDM turns, we should be looking at wide positions to create overloads.
