Activity #1 Creating chances in the Final Third (20 mins)

Combinations to finish 3v2 (overload) Time: 20 minutes

Purpose:

develop combinations to finish in the final third while working aerobically to develop soccer endurance

Set-Up:

  • Field 50 x 30 yards (split in half with a 5-yard neutral zone)
  • 4 goals, 10 bibs, cones, and 18 balls (9 on each field)
  • Players: 22, 4 teams of 5 split in half (3v2 + GK in each half)

Play:

  • 3 attackers v 2 defenders in each half (20x30) with attackers attempting to combine, finish and score at goal. If defenders win possession, they can dribble into the central zone for 2 points. Rotate roles of players so all players defend and attack.
  • After each phase where a goal is scored or a defender penetrates the neutral zone, all players must sprint to the 'start position' before entering the field again
  • When all 9 balls are gone from the middle, the game ends (count up points and rotate teams to play each other)
  • each phase should last 20 seconds with total games lasting 3 minutes, players must actively recover during games by walking and placing the balls back in the middle (at 1 minute rest between games)
Progression:

Make it easier:

  • Play 3 attackers vs. 1 defender. This should help the players get more success.

Make it more challenging:

  • Progress to 3 attackers vs. 3 defenders.

Coaching Points:

  • Confidence

Players should use ball manipulation skills and combination play to beat the defenders.

  • Isolate 1v1 or opportunities:

Draw defenders in and play to low pressure, where a chance occurs, encourage players to take shooting opportunities. The players should be looking to use different techniques to score. (power, placement)

  • Finishing:

Coaches should focus on the player's technique, accuracy, and power to finish.
