Simple Passing Pattern Working in Small Groups

Organisation

  • Starting with the left hand side players pass the ball in the numerical order shown above, 5 players minimum are needed.
  • Players then follow their pass
  • Progress to the left hand side. IMPORTANTLY, players no longer follow their pass - they rotate in the same order as the first drill.
Coaching Points
  • Player number 2 must play on the half turn in order to be able to play the ball behind them efficiently - emphasise that they should always be checking their shoulder
  • Similarly player number 4 should have a body angle that allows them to see both the field ahead of them and the ball
  • When progressing to the right hand side, emphasise how 5 can move away from the cone to help create easier passing angles for teammates
  • Game realistic movements, once the ball is passed we should immediately move to the next cone as if making a run for the next pass.

Organisation

  • 3v3 to pug goals
  • The player in the middle is playing on both fields
  • To start with it is just a regular small sided scrimmage
  • Middle player must stay in the channel but can move up and down
Progressions
  • Progress so that the ball must now be played to the middle player before a goal can be scored, this will force the middle player of each team to be aware of both squares
  • A further progression could be that they have to pass into the middle OR score within 5 seconds of gaining possession. This will encourage fast and precise counter attacks, while encouraging the retention of possesion if this is not on.
Coaching Points
  • The player in the middle must be aware and constantly scanning both fields
  • The players should be aware of the field around them and if the middle player is paying attention to their field and/or available for a pass 
  • Movement - 3v3, with the middle player not always available means players must move into space efficiently
