Attacking Phase: 3 & 4

Objective: To work effectively to regain possession of the ball in the midfield 3rd and counter attack.

WHO: #6, #7, #8, #9, #10 & #11 with #4 and #5

WHAT: Establishing a line of confrontation, Positioning and starting position of the forward line and support from behind from the midfield line

WHERE: The midfield third, the opponent's defensive half, wide and central positions

WHEN: The ball has been lost, cues such as a bad touch, a bad pass, numerical superiority or the opponent is facing his goalkeeper

WHY: To win possession of the ball sooner rather than later to create scoring chances because of the opponent's inferior skill, or there's an attacking numerical advantage

Stage 1: Warm up (15 mins)

INTENSITY: Moderate to high ACTIVITY TIME: 1 min REST: 30 sec INTERVALS: 10

Activity:

- 3 v 2 in one half, as shown, with (2) bounce players on edge of the oppositions half.

- Coach serves ball in to opposition team (black).

- (2) defenders (Yellow) try to win the ball and play to their wide players before finishing with a first time finish into the goal.

- Black team maintain possession of the ball

Progression:

- Opposition (Black) can have one recovering defender.

Coaching points

1. Counter attackers (Yellow) to work together to win the ball - deny space, delay play and deflect the ball wide to win

2. When winning the ball, penetrate quickly offering good support and balance.

Stage 2: Small Sided Activity (20 mins)

INTENSITY: Moderate to high ACTIVITY TIME: 4 min REST: 1 min INTERVALS: 4

Activity:

- (6) Yellow vs (4) black inside the area plus (4) black bounce players outside the area.

- Black aim to keep possession of the ball

- Yellow try to make their numerical advantage count by pressing as a team in tight spaces.

- When yellow team win the ball, they counter to any of the (4) small counter goals.

Scoring:

- Every goal scored off a counter attack for yellow team is 10 points

- Every 10 passes the opposition team (black) make is 10 points

Progressions:

1. Rotate outside players

2. Put a time limit on the counter attack (6-8 seconds).

Coaching Points

1. Defending principles of play -

- Pressure and cover: delay, deny deflect into tight spaces

- Compactness

2. Reading riggers to win the ball e.g. bad touches and poor passes

3. Counter Attack

- Speed of play: Penetrate the opposition quickly

- Mobility on and off the ball

- Support angels & distances

Stage 3: Expanded Activity (25 mins)

INTENSITY: Moderate to high ACTIVITY TIME: 7 min REST: 1 min INTERVALS: 3

Activity:

- 6 v 4 centrally + (3) bounce players and a GK

- Opposition Team (Black) aim to keep possession in half of the field

- Target Team (Yellow: #'s 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11) look to win the ball in the midfield third and counter attack to large goal.

- (4) Opposition Team players (black) look to recover and win the ball back to the midfield third..

Scoring:

- Every goal scored off a counter attack for yellow team is 10 points

- Every 10 passes the opposition team (black) make is 10 points

Coaching Points:

1. Reinforce previous points on Defending principles of play

2. Communication, quick reactions and team work to press and win the ball.

3. 10 seconds to score off the counter attack.

Activity:

- 7 v 7 or 8v8 to Regular goals (adjust for numbers)

- Both teams formation: 1-3 -3-1 (#1, #2, #3, #4, #6, #8, #9, #10)

- Play to score in the opponent's goal

- Normal FIFA rules apply
