Problem 1:
*red team are finding it difficult to link through strikers in final 1/3 as they are tightly marked with 2 CH's + defensive screen limiting space and passing options.
Solution: Options
*encourage strikers to limit there touches and interchange with opposite movement to try and drag defenders out of position and create space for link up play with midfield players.
1/ Can red No 9 step in to become short striker with opposite movement from red No 10 to play long striker to occupy & split the yellow CH's. If red No 9 has space then he can open up and take ball on back foot or if yellow screen locks on he is looking for a bounce pass as the trigger for red No 8 to link and play through pass for wide player to break the line. Both red 9 & 11 will then make the box.
2/ The use of the bounce pass is key for the strikers as zone 14 is usually overloaded with defenders and repetition is needed to help develop an understanding for passing triggers for players in final 1/3.
Keypoint:
*It is important to also coach the midfield players not to step in to hole too early as this will block passing line into striker eg red No 8 needs to pull away from ball to create space for red No 9 who then steps in to link play.
*another option would be for wide player to pass and follow with link from long striker stepping into space, this would then trigger opposite movement form short striker for through ball.
*phase 1 for 10 mins then switch FB's and wide player to play from right side for further 10 mins.

Organisation: SSG
Area
*functional area stays in place but replace small cones with flat markers for boundary.
*Yellow team set up with GK > 2 x CH's > diamond + striker & red team set up 2-4-2
*20 balls with coach who starts play with pass to one of 2 defenders
Time: 20 mins - 4 blocks of 5 mins with 1 min recovery between blocks (5:1/5:1/5:1/5:1)
Set up: Objectives/Conditions
*Red team play from coach and try to score with stipulations 1/ There has to be a link through a striker before they can score 2/ only 1 red player can be in wide channels at any one time (striker can rotate with wide player) & if ball goes out of play then play starts again with coach
*yellow team can go in all areas at any time and they have 8 seconds to try and score in 2 small goals on turn over. If GK has possession then he can look to play and 8 second time limit still applies.
Key coaching points for RED team:
*Re-educate on problem/solutions from function when needed and encourage players to pass forward whenever possible and apply stipulations if play is slow or negative with options of a 30 second time limit or only 1 pass backwards in each phase of play as in function.

Problem 2:
*Out of possession the yellow team have flattened out to a compact and narrow midfield unit to try and stop passing lines into strikers and attempts from red team to play through the 1/3rds have failed several times.
Solution:
*encourage red CM midfield players to come short and show for the ball and strikers to stretch and give width to front line. A longer and more direct diagonal pass can be played into the opposite striker for him to pin his CH then link up with midfield runner from deep or hold up play to allow 2nd striker to link in final 1/3. The longer pass is also the trigger for wide players to move in relation to ball for possible flicks etc and as ball travels the red midfield players need to to anticipate and get goal side of opponents to win 2nd ball.
Key coaching points:
* knowing when to step in and when to stretch the line to create space for strike partner to react with opposite movement (short & long striker)
* recognise when the bounce pass is needed to link up with forward runner (up back and through)
* encourage strikers to use a double movement to create a yd of space to link play, especially in zone 14 when defensive a overload is common (cause an element of chaos).
* a striker with his/her back to goal can be an important element in offensive play as long as he has options when receiving a pass and his strike partner can support quickly to link play.
* an individual strikers movement needs to be the trigger for the midfield unit to link play with the team then reacting in/out possession to maintain distances and recycle the ball if required.
