Description

U10-12 GK Crossing Session. Focus on techniques used to deal with high balls and cut backs and identifying triggers/ making effective decisions on when to attack crosses.

Activation Game (30 mins)

Set up/Organisation/Description:

  • Area size ranging from 10 x 10 
  • Mannequins represent tennis net in middle, seperating area into 2 halves
  • 2V2 
  • 7 aside goal placed centrally on back line of each side of pitch

Instructions/Explanations:

  • GK throws ball over mannequins (like ball going over tennis net)

  • Opposition GKs aim to prevent ball dropping on floor in their side of the court
  • If ball lands in your side of the court after being thrown over mannequins then opposition score a point
  • If you catch ball and prevent it from hitting ground, you can then attack oppositions court by returning with a throw
  • If a GK successfully meets the ball high, they can pop it straight back over in 1 fluid movement (Encourages GKs to attack ball at highest point with efficient timing and forces opposition to constantly adjust positioning and be ready for returned high ball)
  • Play to a points total i.e. first to 11 or a time limit i.e highest score after 3 minutes

Progression(s)

  • Players can now throw or strike from floor/hands to try and score into the 7 aside goals to score a point in addition to throwing over mannequins and touching floor as before
  • This forces GK to make decision on whether to defend goal or attack cross; encourages communication between GKs and also increases travelling to get to attack high ball (game-realism)
  • Another GK or coach can position in the middle near the net (shown with red player) and intercept/ change flight of the ball to cause uncertainty and force quick transition movements i.e. if green throw high over net towards yellow half the coach may intercept and strike back at the green goal causing them to quickly readjust and set to defend the goal

    i.e. coach may catch the strike from green when yellow have dropped then pop it high forcing yellow GK to be positive and attack ball in the air

Technical Activation

Set up/Organisation/Description:

  • 4x flat markers horizontally set with 1 step between
  • 1 flat marker 6-10 yards back either side

Instructions/Explanations:

  • GK can vary fast feet through flat markers i.e. 2 foot steps, 1 foot, lateral or horizontal shuffle, 1 or 2 foot bounds, over back etc

    Option 1:

  •  GK receives back pass from server 1 controls and plays back then moves through cones and finishes with volley at server 2. GK can control and switch play to server 2 as a progression. Work both sides- 4 reps

    Option 2:

  •  Server 1 feeds volley into GK who then moves across through cones and is played in for low dive from server 2. Repeat both sides. 4 reps

    Option 3:

  •  GK is played a low angled cut back at server 3. Then on quarter turn receives volley from server 2. GK then moves across goal and finished with high ball (under arm throw feed) from server 1. Switch and work both sides. 4 reps

Technical Practice

Set up/Organisation/Description:

  • 2x 7 Aside goal (15 yards apart)
  • 2x Defenders in possession + 1CM (Become wingers and Striker out of possession)

Instructions/Explanations:

  • Either defender rolls ball out of feet as trigger for GK to support
  • GK can switch play to opposite full back or bounce pass of CM then play to opposite full bacl
  • Receiving full back becomes winger (as if loss of possession) and dribbles to by line to play cut back
  • GK readjusts to deal with cut back- If he holds ball he can break out and transition by throwing at opposite 7s goal for other GK to deal with
  • If GK drops and decides not to attack cut back they receive recovery strike from edge of box from GK 2

Progression(s)

  • High ball/ driven cross rather than cut back (Receiving full back controls and crosses)
  • Rather than throw at goal in transition- Can roll to full back to turn and shoot on angle or can set back to GK to strike at goal from the floor

Game-Related

Set up/Organisation/Description:

  • 2 goals- 15 yards apart
  • Mannequin and Striker in centre
  • 2 wide feeders

Instructions/Explanations:

  • Ball starts with wide players and play is multidirectional
  • Wide players can dribble to by line and cut back for striker
  • Wide players can touch and strike
  • Wide players can pass into Striker for first time finish on either goal
  • Wide players can bounce pass/ combine with striker to create crossing or shooting opportunity
  • Wide players can start play by throwing ball for high cross/ driving cross in
  • If GK holds ball then they can bounce pass off CM or wide player to strike on opposite goal or break out and throw on opposite goal
  • If GK conceeds their opponent scores a point- highest points total in 3 mins wins and stays on

Progression(s)

  • Quick fire rotation- All GKs in if you conceed you are out of goal and switch with striker/ wide player. GK that scores stays in until the conceed. Highest points total wins
