    Specific Practice (30 mins)

    Team Setups

    • Red Team: Playing in a 1-4-2 setup. Removed attackers, with the goalkeeper, back four, and two central midfielders remaining.
    • Blue Team: Playing in a modified 1-4-2-3-1. Removed the goalkeeper, center-backs, and one central midfielder, leaving the full-backs, two midfielders, wingers, and striker.

    Session Objectives

    • Red Team Objectives:

      • How to defend against wide overloads.
      • How to defend against central overloads.
    • Blue Team Objectives:

      • Use wide areas to create numerical advantage.
      • Exploit central spaces to create overloads.

Key Principles for Red Team (Defensive Play):

    • Protect the Middle: Prioritize defending central spaces.
    • Force Wide: Channel the opposition’s play into wide areas.
    • Minimize Box Entries: Limit the number of attacking players entering the penalty area.
    • Stop Crosses: Prevent deliveries into the box.
    • Defend the Box: Be compact and organized to stop goal-scoring opportunities.

Key Principles for Blue Team (Attacking Play):

    • Recognize Overloads: Identify situations where a numerical advantage can be created.
    • Utilize Spare Players: Move the ball to the player in space to exploit the overload.
    • Player Movement: Use rotations and interchanges to unsettle the defense.
    • Ball Speed: Move the ball quickly to exploit gaps.
    • Commit Defenders: Draw defenders out of position to create attacking opportunities.

    Block 1: Defending Wide Overloads

    • Scenario: The Blue team focuses on creating 2v1 overloads in wide areas using their full-backs and wingers.

    • Red Team Response:

      • The full-back and one central midfielder shift over to create a 2v2 matchup.
      • The central midfielder tracks the overlapping run of the opposing full-back to prevent penetration.
    • Problem-Solving:

      • If a Blue central midfielder shifts over to create a 3v2:
        • One of the Red central midfielders adjusts to create a 3v3 while the back four prioritizes protecting the area just outside the box.

    Block 2: Defending Central Overloads

    • Scenario: The Blue team looks to exploit central spaces with their attacking midfielder and striker.

    • Red Team Response:

      • Center-backs must be proactive in stepping out to intercept passes aimed at the striker.
      • Central midfielders track runs from deeper players, ensuring third-man runs are covered if defenders fail to intercept.
    • Problem-Solving:

      • If the Blue team’s full-back moves centrally to create an additional overload:
        • The Red team blocks off central passing lanes and forces the play wide, regaining their compact defensive shape.

    Area Setup

    • The session takes place on a tapered half-pitch.

    Team Setups & Roles

    • Red Team (Coached): A 1-4-2-3-1 formation with the right winger (RW) and left winger (LW) removed, leaving the goalkeeper, back four, two central midfielders, and central attacking midfielder.
    • Blue Team (Managed): A 1-4-3-3 setup with one center-back (CB) and one central midfielder (CM) removed, leaving the goalkeeper, full-backs, remaining midfielders, wingers, and striker.
    Blocks
    • 3x4min blocks, with 1-minute rest between blocks.
    • 15 minutes total

    Problems and Solutions

    • Problem 1: Wide Overloads (2v1 against Red Full-Back)

      • Solution:
        • The nearest central midfielder (RCM or LCM) shifts wide to create a 2v2 situation.
        • The CM communicates with the Red #10 to drop deeper and cover the space left in midfield.
    • Problem 2: Central Overloads (ST or Defender Steps into Midfield)

      • Solution:
        • If the opposition striker drops into midfield, a Red CB follows to match up 2v2 or 3v3. The CB ensures the defensive line stays narrow to cover the gap created.
        • If an opposition defender pushes into midfield, the Red #10 tracks their run and helps maintain a 2v2 or 3v3 centrally.
    • Problem 3: Switching Play to Exploit Overloads

      • Solution:
        • When the ball is switched to the Blue full-back, the nearest Red CM sprints to apply pressure while the Red #10 shifts centrally to cover the CM’s position. The other CM rotates back to their original spot.
        • If the ball is switched to the Blue winger, the nearest Red full-back moves quickly to engage. The defense shifts across, and the Red CM on that side positions themselves to intercept a backward pass if the Blue team attempts to switch again.

    Session Conditions, Challenges, and Targets

    • The Red team scores 2 goals if they capitalize on a transition.
    • Playing into the striker (ST) quickly can be worth an additional goal if Reds struggle with progression.
    • If the Blue team successfully creates and exploits an overload to score, they earn 2 goals.

Key Attacking Focus for Blue Team

    • Attack the penalty area decisively.
    • Recognize and exploit overloads.
    • Identify and utilize spare players.
    • Use player movements and interchanges to create overloads.
    • Play at speed with minimal touches.
    • Advance full-backs to support attacks.

    What If?

    • If Red Team is successful defensively:
      • The Blue team should start their build-up deeper to encourage the Reds to press higher.
      • Reds can adjust by either:
        • Matching numbers higher up with a CM supporting the ST and #10 in the press, while a CB steps into midfield, and the backline narrows.
        • Staying compact and maintaining their shape to avoid exposing space behind, depending on the game situation.

    Technical Details

    • Identify pressing triggers and recognize when to press.
    • Maintain proper body positioning to force play wide.
    • Use pressing angles that discourage central play.#Understand when to step in to intercept passes.

    Defensive Principles of Play

    • Read the opposition's movements quickly.
    • Press decisively and protect central areas.
    • Allow the furthest players to remain unmarked if necessary
