Shoot and Recover Drill - Variation 1
On 'play' (whistle), the first player (Blue) sprints forward with the ball and takes a free shot at goal.
The shot signals the opposite player (Red) to start their sprint forward and shot, meanwhile the attacking blue player becomes a defender and has to sprint back across the field to limit the attacker (force them wide).
As soon as the attacking player (Red) has shot, the signals the next opposition player (Blue) to start their attack.
Attack > Defend > Collect a ball and rejoin the line
Coaching Points
This is a great drill to keep the mind focussed and switch from attack to defend.
Watch players switch off after the shot and encourage them to get after the attacker.
The defender is not anticipated to actually get across and make a tackle, the emphasis is getting there with speed and pressurising the shot.
Encourage both attacking and defending to be done at speed.
Encourage shots to be across the keeper and in the corner
Encourage keepers to be in the correct position and set their feet at the time of the shot
Keepers are constantly working, praise them for their efforts at the end of the drill
Watch decision making of the players. Do they take the shot early (further distance) and enable to get across and defend easier or get closer to score and make the defensive distance greater to recover?
The animation deliberately shows a player switching off and not defending
