Warmup SSG (10 mins)

Warmup:  As players arrive to the session they join a SSG.  Players can choose what team they are on but can not have a numerical advantage of more then one up.  

Equipment.  Balls/Pinnies/Nets/Cones 

Field size 30 by 40

Duration: 5-7 minutes

Sharks and Minnows (10 mins)

Sharks and Minnow game

Players begin by dribbling in an area of 15 by 20.  Players are encourage to be creative. Ask players to demonstrate some different moves. Duration 5 minutes.  

Coach will ask for volunteers to start the game as a shark.  4 sharks in a group of 12.  The 4 sharks hold the pinnies in their hand and attempt to win possession from the 8 minnows.  When the minnow looses possession they exchange ball and pinnie with shark and the rolls are reversed.  

Duration 5 minutes

Equipment: Pinnies, Cones, Balls 

Coaching Points:  Encourage players to be creative and explore different areas of the field while being aware of the spaces being taken up by the other players. 

Progression:  Change the size of field or number of sharks

Note:  Players that become sharks should not go after the player that just got them.

Possession Game (15 mins)

Possession game 5v5 +2

In an area of 30 by 40 the team in possession will attempt to play the ball into all 4 areas of the field.  When they have played the ball into all 4 areas of the field they can score on either of the 2 goals.

Equipment:  Pinnies (3 colours), cones to mark field size, 2 nets, balls

Duration: 15 minutes

Coaching points:  After explaining the rules of the game ask the player what they think they need to do to be successful.  Coach should look for and elicit responses like spread out  good passes getting open  pressing or win the ball back.  After about 5 minutes call them back in and ask players what they thought of their performance?  What did they do well and anything they would like to do better? Continue playing for 10 more minutes.  Coach should look for positive moments and recognize those moments with the players. 

Progression: Increase the number of passes or use less neutral players.

Rapid Fire Shooting (10 mins)

Rapid fire shooting game.  Players dribble the ball into marked area and shoot on goal. Once the player shoots they become the goalie.  The goalie retrieves the ball and joins the shooting line.  Players in line can start dribbling as soon as the player in front of them has shot.

Equipment:  2 goals/balls/cones to mark out shooting area.  

Duration 10 minutes 

Coaching points:  Encourage players to attack with speed and proper shooting technique. The player first in line can a Ask players to keep track of the number of goals they score.  

Progression. Increase shooting distance or add a defender.

SSG 6V6 (20 mins)

6v6 small sided game. Explain the rules of the game. Each player will take a turn in net. 

Equipment:  Pinnies, cones to mark out field, balls set up around the field, 2 nets

Duration 15-20 minutes

Coaching points:  Though guided discovery have players identify the things that they can do to be successful.  Try and get them to see different spaces or passes they can make.  Have them identify different ways to support the player on the ball or what they think they should do when they lose the ball.

Keep a visual score of the game.
