Description

What:

  • Performing a give and go, combination play, to beat the defender and create a chance to shoot.

Where:

  • Attacking third of the field.

Who:

  • Midfield and Forwards.

When:

  • When a forward or midfielder is dribbling upward and there is a support player to the side, creating a 2v1 scenario. 

Why:

  • There are times where our offense holds onto the ball to long and attempts to beat a defender with a dribble in a 2v1, when two light passes could do the same thing.

Intro (10 mins)

Organization:

  • 25 x 30 Yards rectangle
  • Groups of 3 with one ball

Instructions:

  • Two players work to execute a give and go around a defender
    • Defender is just standing for first three rotations
  • Team of two attempt to get as many give and gos within the timeframe
  • See which group can do the most
  • 60 second rounds
    • Rotate defenders each time

Coaching Points/Questions:

  • Release ball to supporting teammate
  • Accelerate into open space without the ball
  • Communicate to teammate to receive ball back
  • Weight/Timing of pass
  • Movement on/off ball

Progressions:

  • Defender can now steal the ball

Main Activity (15 mins)

Organization:

  • 3 teams of 4
  • 2 fields

Instructions:

  • Two teams play a 2v2 and try to get the ball from one side to another for a point
  • Neutrals are used to be a wall pass (bumper)
  • Players play to neutral and receive the ball back

Coaching Points/Questions:

  • Release ball to supporting teammate
  • Accelerate into open space without the ball
  • Communicate to teammate to receive ball back
  • Weight/Timing of pass
  • Movement on/off ball

Progressions:

  • Must perform a give and go inside before passing to neutral
