Ball Mastery & Quickfeet lines. (20 mins)

  • Activity Name: Ball Mastery & Quick feet weaves.
  • Activity Description: Player starts with the ball at the start of line 1 to begin with player can weave through the gaps with both feet then they leave the ball sprint over to line to then can begin by doing shuffles- 2 jockeys side to side to weave through the cones- player can then sprint diagonally back the ball and weave back through the cones they then leave the ball and go through the quick feet stuff one more time to complete a circuit- 2x ball work, 2x footwork.
  • Progression/Variations: 1: ballwork- normal dribbling/ Quickfeet- 2 jockey weave. 2: Ballwork- single cuts- inside/outside touches on one foot- players should alternate which foot they use/ quick feet- backwards 2 jockey weave. 3: ball work- toe taps forwards to weave through (for high level players have them switch from forwards and backwards- for lower level players have them stop the ball in each gap and do 5-8 toe taps on the spot)/ quickfeet- little 5 second sprint in each gap. 4: Ball work- Soccer boxes forwards to weave through (for high level players have them alternate between forwards and backwards- for lower level have them stop the ball on the spot and do soccer boxes on the spot for 5-8 touches)/ quick feet- come to the side of the cones start with one foot in one foot out and do criss cross jumps so swich feet as you move down the cones. 5: Ball work- roll tap- sole roll using the correct foot to switch to the other side of the cones then tap the ball forward with the opposite foot then sole roll back to the other side and repeat/ quickfeet- hops on one foot to weave through- have players switch which foot they hop with. 6: Ballwork- Pull back with the sole push out with the laces, catch the ball on the opposite sole and repeat/ quickfeet- hopscotch. 7: Ball work- Use L turns to weave the cones/ Quickfeet- Bunny hops. Feel free to add in other ballwork/quickfeet ladder exercises you know.
  • Coaching points: Lots of touches- but soft quick light touches. Light on our feet and quick on our feet. Don't look at the ground the whole time during our ball mastery try to glance up.
  • Small Groups: For groups of 2 just have the other player start at the quick feet line (2). For groups of 3 just set up another ball work line (3) have players start on a line each then move through 1-2-3-1. For groups of 4 have the players work in pairs.

Passing and Receiving triangle (20 mins)

  • Activity Name: Passing triangle.
  • Activity Description: So set up 1 triangle with big cones- 5ft between each cone. Coach starts at the point with the ball player works at the top. Player works through different passing and receiving. Set up 1- Coach has the ball player starts in the middle opens up their body receives back foot- takes a touch out their feet past the cone then plays back the coach, they then set in the middle again and work the other side- keeps working for a set time- 2 Minutes for high level/ 1.30 for lower level. Set up 2- Player starts on the outside of the cone opens up- touches inside with the backfoot out the feet past the cone then plays the ball back to the coach. Set up 3- Player starts middle checks out then cushions the pass back in on the first touch with the foot further away from the cone.  Set up 4- Coach starts with the ball in their hands, player checks out and then cushion volleys the ball back into coaches hands.
  • Coaching points- Players should set their body correctly to receive the passes- so one hip and shoulder facing where the ball is coming from, the other facing where they are going next this gives us a back foot to receive on- I like to remind my players we should always be able to see 3 corner flags when we receive a pass.  Nice passes with the inside of our feet. Receiving the ball with the inside of our feet but getting the ball out of our feet on our first touch toward where we are playing next so we can play 2 touch.
  • Small Groups- For groups of 2 just have the other player do the coaches role. For groups of 3 have the other two players just stand either side of the point and do the coaches role so they don't move- for groups of 2/3 be sure to change the working player and non-working player. For groups of 4 set up an additional station have players work together.

Attacking moves reactions. (20 mins)

  • Activity Name: 1v1 moves and reactions.
  • Activity Description: Set up as shown, assign each cone (A, B, C) a name or use different colored cones to begin with. Coach yells out a letter player must attack that cone then use a move to beat the cone then shoot on the goal. When attacking cones A or B the players must first loop around cone 1 or 2 and then attack the cone and perform the attacking move (You can also introduce other moves at cones 1 and 2 - L-Shape, Maradona, Inside/Outside hook spin moves, etc). When attacking cones A, B, C, player should try to come back inside after the move, when attacking B the player can go either side. While waiting for the coach to shout the cone color the player should be positioned between 2 cones and be working on ball manipulation skills or figure 8 dribbling patter. Attacking moves to focus on include -  fake (Sometimes known as a feint/duke), fake shot, scissors, step over, L turn, Matthews double touch, elastico, Rollover, Ronaldo chop, Maradona Turn- any additional ones you know- High level players can also combine these moves together.
  • Variations -
    • Coach (or another player if it is a small group) stands opposite the player who is working and plays passes back and forth until player is instructed to go - in addition to passes ball could be served in the air for volleys, or the other player has another ball which they toss between them while the player is working on ball manipulation skills.
  • Coaching points-  Focus on the fine points of each move- but for each other the touch to beat the cone should be out the players feet direct the goal so the next touch can be a shot. Players should react quick positive first touch toward the cone they need to beat then start to take more touches but quick touches before completing their move.  Attacking moves should be completed with dynamic movement not just using the feet but incorporating the whole body.
  • Small Groups-  For groups of 2 or more- have one player start goalie the other with the ball and if their is more then 2 have the other players just waiting to go but be sure to run it through quick just change goalie after each turn.
  • Progression- If needed eventually add in a real defender when working with groups.
