SSG (15 mins)

Ongoing Assesment 3 // Creating & Exploiting Overloads // In Posession // Welsh Way Principles

Understand when and how to exploit a numerical advantage against the opposition. Focus will be in wide areas but will not be limited to.

This will be achieved by following and coaching the welsh way priniciples linked to creating and exploiting overloads.

" Find Spare man, 2v1's 3v2's & Central 4 Vs 3's"

Organisation/Area Size

The game will take place on 3/4 of a full size pitch

Each team will have 9 players.

In focus team RED IP 1-3-2-3 (1-4-3-3) will play against a 1-4-2-2 (1-4-2-3-1)

Explanation

9v9 game flowing from both sides.

Balance must be ensured throughout the attacking phase and all poisitonal and tactical awareness cannot be abandoned going all out attack. The 6 cannot be left totally exposed. Timing of joining the attack from 2 & 3 will be vital in creating and exploiting the overloads.

Things to consider when looking to overload in wide areas, the 7 & 11 will paint the picture in the positions they take up. The Starting position of 7/11, If they are high and wide, the oppurtunity will be on to underlap as the 2/3 looking to get into dangerous areas to cross into the box.

The Number 10/8 on either side moving into the channels to help create 3v2's where necessary or to play the third man pass to either player making vertical run forward.

If the 7/11 start inside then the 2/3 can play as wide as possible again pushing forward to support in a 2v1/ 3v2 situation with the midfielder in support. If the midfielder comes to support in the wide area 2/7/10 looking to create a 3v2 to deliver a cross, the near side midfielder 10 in this instance will hold his position whilst the 8 furthest from the ball will look to get into the box to support the 9 alongside the 11.

The same things must be considered on the left side and will be coached throughout. The goal is for the wide players to never be in the same vertical lines. This will help improve the unbalancing of the opposition team.

If no over load can be found on the right side then the option will be there to play quickly across the field to find a potential 2v1 on the opposite flank with the 3/11 vs the 2 or a 3 vs 2 with 3/8/11 to go to goal quickly.

The Number 10/8 on either side moving into the channels to help create 3v2's where necessary or to play the third man pass to either player making vertical run forward.

Central Overloads will be key when the option is not on wide and there will be many options to create these. The focus when we cannot play wide will be with the 9/8/10 and one of the wingers 7/11 coming from out to in to create overloads in these areas.

"In a 2v1 or 3v1 situation, using the midfielder/winger/full back combination or when playing down the middle using the centre midfielders and striker it is always important to make the opponents feel like they are being attacked. "thus putting them on the defensive" (Basile, P)

Reds when out of posession will adhere to the sub principle of out of possesion for creating and exploting overloads "Press quickly, protect the middle & Leave the furthest man"

The blue team in the specific and SSG part of the practice will be managed to follow the Welsh Way principles out of possesion for creating and exploting overloads "Press quickly, protect the middle & Leave the furthest man"

Blue team when they win the ball will look to attack quickly and will have a maximum of 6 passes to try and do so. After three of the passes they can play to the target goals which will represent the movements of the 9/10.

Gk will look to talk to players on field and encourage rotations to create and exploit overloads. Can also play passes that cause problems for the oppositon team.

The Unit

The unit being focused her is a 1-4-3-3 / 1-4-1-2-3, in the 9v9 the formation will be zoomed into a 9v9 format. The players being lost are the 4 & 5 CB’s as we are looking to push into the opposition half and create overloads from midfield onwards. (* All over the field but for this session the focus is in the middle and final third.)

GK Has to be vocal and a leader for his team, looking for important information to be passed on to teammates on the picture he can see. Distribution skills will be important as it is likely that he can start some overloads through clever distribution or showing for support on his own.

This player will be very important driving into the opposition with the ball, the focus will be in the interior and exterior channels of the field to provide underlapping and overlapping runs. This player can also be expected to step into midfield when necessary to create an overload if a centre midfielder moves into a wide channel.
