Session Focus: Losing possession in our half (Transition) - 1v1 / Emergency Defending

Key Coaching Points:

  • When we lose possession in our half, we must show desire to win the ball back as quickly as possible
  • Closest player puts pressure on the ball, look to be assertive, slow play down and force opposition away from goal (speed up, slow down, sit down and show away from goal)
  • Body on the line defending
  • Quickly change shape to protect the goal by creating a narrow and compact block centrally
  • Close gaps as quickly as possible to prevent counter attacks
  • If we are in front of the ball, recovery runs (sprints) needed to get back behind the ball

Session Structure:

1) FIFA 11+ Warm Up (15 minutes)

2) Head Tennis - Fun Activation Activity (15 minutes)

3) Individual Counter Pressing - 1v1 (10 minutes)

4) Small Unit Counter Pressing - 2v2/3v3 (10 minutes)

5) Transition Wave Game (15 minutes)
