Station 1

Y Passing Skill Station


Equipment per station:

  • 4 red cones
  • 4 yellow cones
  • 2 or 3 footballs

Core Skill:

  • Receiving the ball on the back foot half turn for progressive ball movement
  • Passing execution
  • Explosive dribbling & abrupt stopping

Key Skills:
  • Ball foot receive on half turn (Applies to Player B)
  • Locked ankle, open hips, connect with centre of the ball so no bobble in the pass (applies to Player A & B)
  • Explosive Laces dribble after one touch receive. Abrupt stop/trap ball. (Player C & D).
 

Explanation:
1. Place a player on each red cone. Spare players line up behind player A. 

2. Player B scans and checks out from cone the oppositive direction of where they're playing the ball too. 

3. Player A passes a ball to player B. Player A follows pass.

4. Player B checks out, and receives ball back foot half turn, then plays the ball to player C. Player B follows pass.

5. Player C should be scanning and checking out prior to receiving the ball.

6. Player C front foot receive. Pushes the ball forward first touch. 

7. Player C explosive dribbling towards the yellow gate. Player D must abruptly stop with the ball at the yellow gates.

8. Proceed to the back of the line.

Repeat with player B checking out opposite to previous player, and playing out to the opposite side, e.g.: Player D. 


Coaching points:

  • All players must be on there toes ready to receive the ball. No flat footed players
  • Player B to receive back foot half turn
  • Player C & D receive front foot, explosive (laces) dribbling, abrupt stop/trap ball at yellow gates
  • Scan & communication between players
  • Set up multiple stations to reduce bus queues
Complete for 2/3 minutes. Pause for brief discussion for areas of improvement, then continue again, for 2/3mins.

Station 2

Thinking Game

Core Skill:

  • Executing a skill move in a 1v1 situation to beat the defender or create space to pass.
  • Receiving the ball on the half turn.
  • Attacking the space.
  • Passing.

Key Skills:
Attacking
  • Scissor, Cruyff, body feint, step over, sole roll, v slap, etc. (Player B or player with the ball)
  • Movement off the ball to create space for the ball carrier, or for next pass (Player C)
  • Movement to anticipate pass (Player D)
Defensive
  • Anticipating the Pass: They read the game and predict where the ball might be played next. Position yourself accordingly.

Equipment & Setup: 
  • six cones
  • five players per team (three players within the rectangle, two on either end)
  • 2 lots of bibs 
  • Ensure pitch size is not too small, we don't want to encourage long passes from end zone to end zone for this practice. We want to encourage ball movement & 1v1 situations.

Explanation:

1. Player A starts by passes the ball to Player B (attacker). Player B receives the ball on the half turn to advance forward.

2. Player B must utilise their GAME ZONE players (Player C) to either create space or passing options to progress the ball to Player D. e.g.: Either by beating the opponent 1v1, or passing to Player C who can then pass to Player D.

3. When Player D receives the ball in the END ZONE, they must immediately dribble onto the pitch to transition the ball back to the opposite END ZONE. Player D is now part of the GAME ZONE.

The player that passes to Player D replaces them in the END ZONE.

4. If the Blue team intercept the ball, they immediately become the attackers, and need to transition the ball from END ZONE to END ZONE.

Coaching Points:

  • Encourage receiving on the half turn to play forward.
  • Encourage the end zone player to anticipate their receiving pass and to drive into space for the next attack to be successful.

Rules:
  • Players in the END ZONE cannot tackle each other.
  • END ZONE players cannot pass it to each other. The ball must move through the GAME ZONE and other players are encouraged to be utlised. 
Score:
  • The attacking team must move the ball from one END ZONE to other END ZONE to score one point.
  • Nominate a captain to keep score for their team.

Station 3

Situation Game

Core Skill:

  • Receiving ball back foot playing forward
  • Executing a skill move in a 2v1 (plus a goalkeeper) situation to create space to shoot

Key Skills:
Scissor, Cruyff, body feint, step over, sole roll, v slap, etc. (Player A)

Equipment & Setup:
  • eight cones
  • six players per team (attacking team and defending team)
  • 2 lots of bibs
  • Miniroos gameday goals (if possible)

Explanation:
1. Player B (attacker) begins bouncing on their toes (not flat footed), scans to see where all players are located (attacker). 
2. Player B calls for the ball on their left foot (back foot) to advance forward to space.
3. Player A (attacker) plays a strong right footed pass to Player B (attacker). 
4. Player C (defender) presses Player B (attacker) once the ball is passed.
5. Player B (attacker) completes a progressive touch forward. Encourage Player B to completes a skill move to either get past Player C (defender) or to create space to score from the Player B Shooting zone.
6. If Player B moves right, Player A should complete an overlapping run to create a passing option, or look for a deflection. If Player B moves left, Player A should complete a right wing run with he same objectives.

Rules: 

Player B must shoot from the shooting zone.
Player C must score from the End Zone. 
If Player C (defender) wins the ball, then must drive to the red gates.
Player B has 10 seconds to score before the game is over. 
Change each time who passes the ball in (e.g.: Player A plays a pass to Player B, the next game Player D plays the pass to player B.)

Rotation/Points: 
Two teams rotating. 
One team complete attacking Player A and B roll. Then rotate with defenders who can complete the Player C and goalkeeper roll. 

Coaching points:

Attacking

  • Player B to complete a progressive touch to advance forward.
  • Player B to create space for Player A to complete a run (eg: don't drive through the middle)
  • Player B to complete a feint to create space to shoot long range.
  • Acknowledge a Player that completes a skill move. Even if it doesn't work, or the loss the ball. Ensure they are acknowledged for decision making.

Defending
  • Player C (defender) curve their run to the side Player B receives the ball. 
  • Player C (defender) must be on their toes, side on, bent knees. **DON'T DIVE IN FIRST TIME - READ THE PLAY**
  • Player A and D must play a strong pass (balance foot pointing to the direction of the pass, hips open, passing foot ankle locked, connect with the middle (the meatiest part) of the ball to remove bounce/bobble. 


Scoring:

  • One point for a goal for Player B (attacker). 
  • Two points if Player C (defender) steals the ball and drives over the line. 
  • Nominate a captain to keep score for each team and call out scores at the end.

Station 4

Skill Game

Explanation:

1. Game start by coach lobbing the ball into the diamond. 

2. Once a player receives the ball (Player A) then must move the ball to there nearest End Zone.
3. Player A passes to the Player B from one side of the End Zone, and Player B must back foot receive and must player out from the opposite side (KEY LEARNING: Playing forward to space)

4. Player A replaces Player B int he End Zone once they've completed the pass and as Player B dribbles out with the ball the other side.

4. If the defending team win the ball, the must complete the same task as above with their end zone players.



Coaching Points:

  • Encourage receiving on the half turn to play forward within the game to move the ball from left to right/right to left.
  • Encourage the END ZONE player to anticipate their receiving pass and to drive into space for the next attack to be successful.
  • Encourage players on the pitch to play to the END ZONE players from one side, to create space for them to exit the other side.

Rules:
  • Players in the END ZONE must stay within the end zone until the receive a pass.
  • Players in the END ZONE must drive out with the ball from the opposite side the receive the ball.
  • The player that passes to the END ZONE player must replace them in there until they receive a pass.
  • END ZONE players cannot pass it to each other. The ball must move through the GAME ZONE and other players are encouraged to be utlised.
Score:
  • The attacking team must move the ball from one END ZONE to other END ZONE to score one point.
  • Nominate a captain to keep score for their team.
  • If the ball goes out. Coach lobs a new ball in.

Station 5

Small Sided Games

  • Try to cap teams at 4v4 if possible
  • Goals only count if all attacking team players are over the halfway line supporting (No keeper/sweepers). This will encourage all players to be constantly watching the game and be involved even off the ball
  • Play two/three touches for five minutes an then unlimited
