This session is based on the FAW Welsh Principle of Play of Defending Overloads.
The aims of this session are to defend against overloads, communicate with teammates, stay compact, and close down quickly to block shots.

Setup
- Area size: 33x44
- Half a pitch with two mini goals on the halfway line with one big goal.
- 6 players in blue on the halfway line
- 5 in red beside the big goal with one goalkeeper
- 12 players
- Add poles/mannequins halfway between the big goal and mini goals near the edge of the pitch, leaving space through the middleConditions
- Goalkeeper plays a ball to one blue, and another blue joins in the attack to go score in the goal.
- One red player comes onto the pitch to create a 2v1
- Once the first play has gone through, the two blues have to run around the mannequin as the keeper play the next ball to the blue, creating a 3v2
- It then continues to a 3v2, 4v3 and a 5v4
- once all the players are on the pitch and the ball goes out, it resets and starts back from the keeper playing out to a blue.
- If the red block a shot or intercepts, they can go score in the mini goal to gain 1 point
- If the keeper saves a shot, they continue playing, and the keeper plays out to the red to try go and score in the mini goal to gain 1 point.
Targets
- 1 point if a blue scores in a goal
- 1 point if a red scores in one of the mini-goals
- 2 points if a red intercepts and goes scores in 10 seconds
Challenges
- Can the red score in 10 seconds after receiving a pass from the goalkeeper?
- Can the goalkeeper play out to a red if the keeper saves a shot to counter quickly to gain points for goals?
- Can the blue get back into the game by running around the pole in 7 seconds
Progression
The red team will gain a point for delaying, and the blue team will not score within 10 seconds of time pressure.

- Give the red team a point for winning the ball

- 5 in red also in the middle with one goalkeeper
- 12 players
Conditions
- The Blues are scoring in the big goal, and the Reds are scoring in the two mini goals.
- The coach will now play into the blue if the ball goes out.
Targets
- Goals scored is 1 point for either team
- If a team manages to score under 10 seconds of intercepting the ball, they gain 2 points.
Challenges
- Can the Reds stay compact and force play out wide and away from the goal?
- Can Blues counter quickly with the additional player and movement on and off the ball to make it more difficult for defenders, creating openings for opportunities to score?
Progressions
- The Red team must score within 10 seconds to get a goal
Regression
- Remove time restraints to make it more realistic if it disrupts the small-sided game.
