Technical Practise.

  • One goal GK along the end. Units of 4 set up in position as 2 x wide players 2 x central players. LCM passes to LM in wide position. LM back passes to LCM who then switches to RM. RM checks back plays to RCM who then switches to LM. When play enters final third, either wide player crosses whilst remaining players make movements to receive finish past the GK.
Coaching Points:

  • Players should use all different movements to receive the ball out wide. Forwards movement in the box needs to be realistic. For example, player who is attacking the front post should make a late run from deep and get across the line of the front position.
  • From wide areas, players should focus on the quality and variety of crosses by either providing driven, low or lofted balls into the final end zone.
  •  Attackers should concentrate on when they should switch play, waiting for the open space to the wing, passing as quickly as possible to move the defence out of position.

Switch Play Skill Practice.

In units of 6 set up in position as 2 wide Midfielders, 2 Centre Midfielders 2 Strikers.

The sequence is as follows:

  • The ball starts with the Centre Midifleder playing to the Left Midfielder. Left Midfielder then opens out to pass to the left Striker, who then passes back to the Centre Midfielder (left).
  • The left-side Centre Midfielder then switches the ball to the Right Midfielder with the right-side Centre Midfielder making an overlap and receiving from the Right Midfielder.
  • When play enters the final third, the right Centre Midfielder  delivers cross whilst remaining players make movements to receive the finish past the GK.

Vary start points direction of play by switching sides, allowing all players to follow the pattern.

Condition Challenges & Targets:

  • Allow the players 2 touches and focus on the quality of passing.
  • Movement of players to switch combine (overlaps/underlaps). Include defenders in final third.

Coaching Points:

  • Players need to be aware of their teammates on different lines, offering different angles to support the players.
  • Players should receive the ball with an open body shape to receive on the back foot and switch the play quickly. When receiving, players need to be able to pass the ball off their second touch being in a position to play quickly. This means on their first touch positioning the ball in a position in front of them and slightly towards the foot they will strike with.
  • Players should look to pass the ball in with good weight, accuracy and timing to be able to combine quickly. If crossing first time then the pass needs to be in front of the player receives.Players on each cone need to move to be able to create space, something they will have to do in a game. By keeping wide as a unit, the team creates width for forward runners and replicates unbalancing the Defenders.

  • As players move, they need to offer supporting angles to their teammates and not standstill on the cones. without the angles, Defenders will find it easy to mark and not be able to unbalance the opposition.
  • Overlapping and underlapping players need to move forward as the ball is moving whilst holding their run to stay on side. Other players need to move also to give a passing angle to the Attackers as well as be in a position to receive the ball.
  • With their passing, players need to be able to move in disguise to replicate the game situations. Players need replicate penetrating through and around defences to break lines and play forward.

Switch Play Small Sided Game.

Pitch with 2 x wide channels. 2 x Teams: 11 vs. 9. Start Position: Centre Back passes to Full Back (FB) in a wide position. FB opens out passes to Wide Midfielder (WM) who then sets back to Centre Midfielder (CM). CM switches to opposite WM. The game becomes live defenders can now enter wide areas. Attacking players free to move anywhere.

Conditions and Challenges.

  • Add a floating player to create an overload for the team in possession.
  • Ball must enter both wide areas central area before every attack
  • Put a 2 touch limit on the players to speed up the play.
Coaching Points

  • Players should be using all different types of movements to support the player with the ball and create space for the switch of play.
  •  Players to identify when it is appropriate to switch the play and attack the opposite side through quick combinations with passes that are accurate with good weight and disguise.
  •  Encourage players to use a variation of passes. When playing out to wide areas the pass should be in front of the wingers so they can run onto the ball before crossing.
