Organisation (Practice Layout & Transition)
We had half of an 11 a side pitch to use at a local 4g facility for the first half hour of training which later became free, allowing us to use the full pitch. Numbers attending were lower than usual, meaning the game at the end of the session was scaled down to play on a small pitch.
Setup only required cones to outline areas and was quick and easy to transition to and from, small pitch already in place with goals prior to arriving.

5v5+2 Switch Play
- 40x40 box
- Red and Blue teams play a possession game using 2 Yellow bumpers at opposite ends
- 1 pt is scored for each time red or blue team can transfer the ball from one yellow player to the other without interceptions.
- Teams work in 3 minute block, then rotate yellows with red/blue
Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions):
Regressions:
- Bigger space
- Take 1 player from each team to use as a bumper player on the outside channels
Progression:
- Smaller space
- Introduce 4 mini goals in corners, teams must pass into one yellow then try to score in one of the goals for a point.
- Introduce channels, make teams transfer the ball through 1 or multiple channels before completing switch to yellow player. (Make yellow receive in different channel)
- 1st Bumper player to touch the ball can add themselves to the game to create an overload.
Challenges, Conditions or Targets:
Challenges
- First team to 5/10 switches, can you complete 5 switches without losing the ball
- Nominate an attacking and defensive team, can defensive team prevent attackers from getting 5 switches, can attacking team get 5 switches
Conditions
- Add mini goals to ends
- Add channels or zones to encourage multi directional switching
Targets
- 1pt for switch of play, additional point if same team switches again without losing the ball (1 = 1pt, 2= 2pts so overall 3pts for team, 3 = 3pts overall 6 etc...)

SSG 5v5+2
- Used 5 a side pitch on 4g facility, goals were low and wide
- Reds vs Blues with goalkeepers, yellows as bumpers can use the entire length of the pitch and play with team in possession.
Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions):
Regression:
- add bumpers to pitch for 7v7
- only 1 yellow must touch ball/no yellows
Progression:
- Smaller playing space
- Yellows can step in to the game after touching the ball to create overload
- Yellows can dribble in to assist/score
- Must score from a cross from a yellow player
Challenges, Conditions or Targets:
Challenges:
- Can you have both yellow players score for your team
- Can you score a second goal without conceding
Targets
- If both yellows touch the ball and team score without losing the ball 2 goals
- If Yellow scores 2 goals
- If all players of team who score over half way line 2 goals

Switching Play
- Box 40x40 with line/cones to spit in half
- Begin with 5 Reds on one side, with 1 red staying as a target in the opposite box.
- Blues are defenders.
- Reds must keep the ball for a target number of passes (3 on this occasion) then transfer the ball to the Red player in the opposite box for 1 pt.
- 4 of the 5 Reds an move box to box, but there must always be 1 target player in the opposite box.
- Blues earn 1 pt for each interception they make.
- Blues work for 2 minutes total, then change places with Reds.
Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions):
Regressions: remove pass rule, have only 1 blue defender, increase space for reds to possess the ball
Progressions: increase passes before transfer, introduce time limit to transfer the ball, add a defender, add touch limit, reduce space of boxes.
Challenges, Conditions or Targets:
Challenges - First defending pair to reach 5/10 pts, first attacking team to reach 10 transfers, most interceptions/transfers in time limit
Conditions - Can introduce mini goal for defending team to try and score in after interceptions, can use mini goal for attackers to score in after x amount of transfers
Targets - 1 pt for transfer, 1 pt for interception, can adjust to include pass limit 2pts if less/more than 5 passes for transfer (depending on coaching point)
