Overloading wide areas to create attacking opportunities (35 mins)

Session Structure:

Three quarter field. 16 players. 8 v 6 with spare man in end zone. Restarts from GK via goal kick or roll out. CB (white) receives the ball wide unopposed and plays long pass into opposition FB (red). Opposed play starts as soon as red FB receives pass. Red team play to score or to a finish (Goal Kick). Corners and throw ins as per regular game. If white team win the ball they can play to score in the small goals or pass to ST. ST can be used as a bounce pass or as hold up player if white team works the ball into an area to score a goal.

Tactical Objectives:

-Create attacking opportunities in wide areas

-Create player overload in wide areas

-Creative movement from FB, WM & WA

-Identify when to pass or when to dribble/run with the ball

-Identify opportunities to play forward quickly

-Identify key moment/opportunity to cross or pass ball into box

-Identify movement in and around the box, including late runs from midfield as play is building up

-Identify when to keep possession wide and when to be direct with attacking play

-Identify when to recycle the ball through DM and switch play

-Players on opposite side of the field create balance with positioning and movement

-Identify where GK is and opposition defenders when ball comes into the box from pass or cross

Technical & Psychological Objectives:

-Good First Touch

-Accurate Passing

-Timing of pass

-Weight of pass

-Angle and speed of movement/run

-Timing of movement/run

-Close control dribbling or run with ball at speed

-Type of pass. Long direct no spin. Mid range with spin/curl. Short fizz. Short slow (player moves to ball).

-Pass into space or to player

-Which surface of the foot is used for each type of pass

-Balance and weight distribution when running with ball or dribbling or changing direction with and without ball

-Contact on ball from cross or pass when shooting at goal.

-First touch shot or take a touch and set up third man run for shot

-Head towards goal or use other body part

-Be creative
