SSG:
Spare players added in to make 9v9 with a goalkeeper in each team. Blues 2-3-3 / Reds 4-2-2. Goal added just above half way to make the length just over half a pitch. Pitch tapered 15 yards from added goal as no fullbacks required for 9v9. Regular game, 1 point for scoring for both teams. Blues must look to implement the 5 zone rule within their play and attempt the pattern from the drill. After 5 minutes of the SSG, add a team tak for both teams and then add that Blues are 2-1 down to QPR with 10 minutes to play in a real life game and must win to win the league.
Attacking With a Front 3 Background and Analysis:
Man City's front 3 (Sterling Aguero Sane) have a combined goal tally of 41 this season, as well as a combined assist record of 24. Their fluidity in the fianl third and occupation of space to stretch the defensive line horizontally is key to their excellent attacking domination and entering the penalty box with ease. Man City front 3 average 7.6 shots per game, 4.9 of these come from inside the penalty area (64.5%)(WhoScored). 87% of goals in the premier league come from inside the penalty area and therefore advancing the ball into that area offers a high chance of a shot being taken and scored (Wright, Atkins, Polman, Jones, Sorgensen 2011)
The better quality teams have 'higher offensive length, width and surface area frequencies' when attacking (Castellano, Alvarez, Figueira, Coutinho, Sampaio 2013)

Drill
Set Up:
Blue: 4-3-3 (3-3) / Red: 4-2-2-2 (4-2). Working with blue team, predominantly front 3. Affecting red team. Just less than half pitch used, tapered to keep blue midfield narrow as fullbacks will not be playing in the drill. 2 mini-goals set up for red team to play into should they win possession. Offside/starter markers will be place on the touchline, around 20 yards high, to apply realism to the defensive line when the first ball is played. Markers will be around the pitch to show clearly to the players the five zones in which the pitch will be split into, the 2 wide areas, 2 halfspaces and the central zone. Blue wingers must be correct footed for the side they are playing on if possible
In Practice:
The ball will start with one of the servers (players not involved until SSG) situatied just wide of the centre circle and they will play into the DM who must receive within the width of the goalposts, this adds realism as if the ball was being advanced by a CB. Once the midfiled receive the ball, play will go live and blues will look to break down the red defence and score to earn 1 point. Should the reds defend well and win back the ball, they will aim to play quickly into the mini goals set up on the taper lines that will act as the 8s in their box midfield, they will receive 1 point if they can score within 10 seconds. Play will alwys restart from the GK when: reds score, reds fail to score but retain possession after 10 seconds, blues score, ball goes out of play for a corner/goal kick.
Coaching Points:
Once players have played for 5 minutes and have got used to the drill and the blues have had some attempts at scoring, a system along with a pattern of play will be integrated.
System: (Man City) when the ball is with the deep lyer, 4 (closest) of the 5 zones must be occupied, with good depth and movement. Always 2 midfielders providing cover. Furthest winger looking to break into the box.
Pattern 1: When deep lyer has the ball, winger comes short and wide to receive and the nearest CM stretches in behind the halfspace, winger looking to drive inside.
