Activation - Juggling

Activation/Warm up - Groups of 3 Juggling (10 Minutes)

ORGANISATION:

  • Players split in to groups of three or a pair if there are odd numbers
  • Make sure each group is spaced enough to avoid collisions

HOW TO PLAY:

  • Players start close, juggling the ball between them and trying to keep it in the air as long as possible
  • Start with a two or three touch limit depending on level
  • Swap players between groups ever 60-90 seconds

COACHING POINTS:

  • Make contact with the ball using the top of the foot near the laces
  • If using inside of foot use the largest part in line with the laces
  • First touch to gain control of the ball in the air, second touch to direct it to the next player
  • Perfectly weighted pass to the next player, high arc to make reception easier

CHANGE IT / PROGRESSIONS:

  • Players start close but slowly move away from the centre of the group while still juggling the ball
  • After the pass a player must move to a new position
  • Make it a competition, which team can keep the ball up for the most touches
  • Can apply these challenges immediately to more experienced players
    • First touch with non-dominant foot
    • First touch must be with inside of the foot
    • Second touch as a header

Drill 1 - First Touch for control and direction

First Touch for control and direction (15 minutes)

ORGANISATION:

  • Cones set in a diamond shape, 7m from green cone to yellow cone and 3m red cone to red cone
  • 1 player on the yellow cone, all other players lined up behind the green cone

HOW TO PLAY:

  • Ball starts with yellow cone player, who passes to the green cone then approaches the midway line
  • Green cone player passes back and moves to apply passive pressure to the yellow cone player as they take their first touch
  • Yellow cone player uses their first touch to choose a red cone to move to (left or right) and then moves around that cone
  • Green cone player continues their run to the yellow cone and prepares to receive
  • Yellow cone player passes to the new green cone player, who bounces it back
  • Yellow cone player then takes the first touch to turn and pass to the new yellow cone player
  • Pattern begins again

COACHING POINTS:

  • Stop the ball using the inside of the foot with a locked ankle
  • Cushion the ball when stopping between the feet and close
  • Turn the hips as the ball contacts the foot to turn with it using the first touch
  • Focus is on using the first touch to control and direct the ball
  • Yellow's first touch on receiving a pass should direct the ball to the side they want to go
  • When receiving a pass on the red cone from the green cone the player should open their stance to then pass to the yellow cone
  • Use the outside of the foot to direct the ball as well as the inside
  • Make sure all passes are strong and to the feet, as the focus is on the receiving first touch

CHANGE IT / PROGRESSIONS:

  • First touches and passes on non-dominant foot where possible
  • Lengthen the field, then make passes between green and yellow lofted, aiming for knee-shin height
  • Instead of passive pressure the green cone player can look to steal

  • Attacking players must retain possession for as long as possible

  • After 30 seconds of possession retained by an attacking team, the coach will add another ball to their area

  • If the ball leaves the area it is out of play, but there must be at least 1 ball in each area

COACHING POINTS:

  • Using first touch to avoid pressure
  • Turn the body while cushioning the ball to open the stance and face a chosen direction

Decision Making
  • Can I move into an area with more options
  • When I'm receiving the pass then I should use the first touch as more than just a stop

  • If near the goals I should use the touch to set up for a shot
