4 Team Rondo (15 mins)

Set Up

  • Use an area 20*20 divided into fourths (10*10)
  • Players are divided into four teams of 3 players each
  • Each has a ball to start and just keep possession unopposed in 1 or 2 touch
  • When the coach calls the color of one team that team defends and sends one player to each of the other grids in an attempt to win the ball back
  • If a defending player wins the ball in one grid or it goes out of bounds, they can then support their teammate in another grid so that they are defending in a 3v2 situation instead of 3v1.
  • Repeat so that each team has to be the defending team at least once.
Coaching Points
  • Move ball quickly
  • Be aware of surroundings, must know where pressure is coming from

6v4 to mini-goals (20 mins)

Set Up

  • Use an area 50(wide)*45.
  • Play 6v4 with the team of 6 playing out from a GK into four mini-goals.
  • The team of 6 should play in a 3-2 formation, a back 3 and 2 pivot midfielders from the 3-4-2-1 formation.
  • The ball should always start with the GK once it goes out.
  • Progress to where the pressing team starts with the ball if the team building out the back scores or plays the ball out of bounds.

Coaching Points:

  • Back 3 should spread to at least the width of the box for adequate spacing when in possession
  • Both pivot midfielders try to provide options higher than the back three in the spaces between the center backs
  • One pivot midfielder should try to be slightly higher than the other to create a diagonal passing line to exploit the overload available in this situation
  • Look to play forward whenever possible but no need to force the ball forward

8v6 to mini-goals (20 mins)

Set Up:

  • Use an area approximately half the pitch.
  • Play 8v6 with the team of 8 scoring in the three mini-goals in a 3-4 formation from the 3-4-2-1 formation.
  • Place the mini-goals as shown in the diagram with the two on the side either half space with the third mini-goal in the middle but 5-10 yards higher than the other two goals.

Coaching Points:

  • Back 3 should spread to at least the width of the box for adequate spacing when in possession
  • Both pivot midfielders try to provide options higher than the back three in the spaces between the center backs
  • One pivot midfielder should try to be slightly higher than the other to create a diagonal passing line
  • Look to play forward whenever possible but no need to force the ball forward
  • Wingbacks need to provide as much width as possible to stretch the opposition.
  • Create and exploit overloads that will allow you or a teammate to be able to play forward and penetrate
