Welsh Principles:
Create and Exploit Overloads - Understand when and how to exploit numerical advantages against the opposition
Organization:
9v9 game over half field.
Channels in wide area still there as a reference point from specific exercise
Blue team - Coached team 1-3-2-3
Red Team - managed team - 1-4-3-1
Balls on half way line with coach - will alwatys restart with the blue team GK.
Explanation:
Blue team in possession is coached - set up in a 1-3-2-3 formation
Red Team out of possession managed (1-4-3-1)
Play will restart from the blue team GK. Red team must be higher than the poles/dotted line before a restart occurs (25 yards from goal line)
Blue team will look to score by creating and exploiting overloads.
Red team will look to win possession and score within 12 seconds of winning possession.
Encourage Player rotations. Wingers to move inside, outside backs to move higher and wider and CMs to move into the outside back position - rotations to create the desired overloads in certain areas of the field
Challenges, Conditions or Targets:
- One player from the blue team must remain in each of the wide channels when their team is in possession
- If blue can connect to a player in the wide area on his own they can create a 2v1 in that space - progress to free play
- Look for overloads centrally as the red team adjusts to the above rule. CF to drop/ RB and LB be come midfielder/ CM be come CF to double up.
- Allow an additional possession and recovery player into the wide zone to create a 3v2 situation.
- Red team must score after 12 seconds - double points for red if all players are above the dotted line to allow for quicker rotations of the blue possession.
- Blue team score after creating an overload in wide area counts as double
- Blue team score within 12 seconds of regaining possession is worth double (looking for overloads in transition from recovery to offense - play forward quickly to exploit advantage).
Coaching Points:
In possession
- find the free player
- Exploit the numerical advantage
- create width and depth
- Fast passes and forward movement to create 2v1s and 3v2s
- Commit bodies into the box to capitalize on the overload.
Out of Possession:
- press quickly
- Protect the middle
- leave the furthest player
Interventions:
- Frame/Walk through
- Concurrent
- Terminal
