This session is aimed at getting players on the ball. It allows them to have the freedom of expression on the ball to develop as creative players. They should be encouraged to try skills throughout and develop their technique whilst doing so.

Using eight players, four go on the outside with a ball (red) and four remain on the inside without the ball. Balls on the outside are constantly being fed into the working players (blue) in the middle. Not only are we working the players techniques, we are also wanting to enhance their movement ability off the ball. Play is continuous and they must receive and pass before finding another feeder who is free. Here, we focus on the accuracy of their pass back and their ability to change direction without the ball.
Techniques to Focus On
1) Control & Pass
2) Volleys
3) Thigh Control & Pass
4) Chest & Pass
5) Chest & Head
6) Header
7) Control Throw In & Pass Back
To Progress
1) Players in the middle turn whilst receiving and play to the player on the opposite side of the grid.
2) Players receive take the ball across then take the player on in 1v1 on the other side of the grid.

In the same grid we now have two red and two blue players opposite each other. Now the two working players in the middle have to try and connect passes to reach each target player. Quick passing and moving is required. Again, as per the previous activities, it is directional with a repetition of moves and focuses on technique with the added advantage of being able to get the players think about the effects (both positive and negative) of their off the ball movement. It also gives players a chance to try their moves and turns in a live game situation.

Play with four goals, two on each end line. Players should use disguise and turns to change the angle of attack and score. In the buildup we have focused on the players technique and their ability to make quick decisions. Quick combination play and a change of direction with the ball is important as the players need to be constantly thinking about how to switch the play. We want our players to be unpredictable (i.e. show the obvious; do the opposite) and encourage them to be creative.

Now play a 4v4 with two goalkeepers. The defending team must drop behind the attacking line when defending. This will allow the attacking team to turn and play back and change the angle of attack. We are looking to get the players thinking about quick combination play, change direction with the ball and
encourage them to be positive and creative on the ball.

Setup 4 yellow markers set up in a square with 1 orange marker in the middle and 2 on the outside. Between four to eight players working in any one grid - Each player has a ball. This is a directional activity where players must dribble the ball and perform specific tasks. Spend time teaching the moves as this exercise can help improve their technique through repetition.
