Defending in Midfield Areas (30 mins)
Defending in Midfield - Set Up:
- Set up the area as per the image 50 x 40, 2 end zones and 2 wide channels
- 2 blue bounce players in the deep end zone, no one is allowed to go into this area, making it a free zone.
- 6 Red defenders in the middle area, with 4 Blues in the middle and 2 Blues, one in each red wide zone. The 2 wide players are not allowed in the central area and must stay in their channel
- The defending Red team look to hold a position in the middle of the area waiting for the ball to be either played into the central area or into the wide red area. When this has happened, the Red team need to look to defend aggressively, pressing and covering, trapping the players and ball in the wide areas in order to prevent the blues finding the target man
- Once this has happened, it is 6 v 4 in the central area, with the Reds looking to score in the mini goal in the deep end zone
- Players alternate between being on the defending team, attacking team and the outside players
Key Points:
Stay Compact - To stop the ball coming through the area centrally, players should look to stay compact to attempt to push the attackers into wide positions where they can try and win the ball
Slide and Screen - To prevent forward passes, defenders need to slide and screen across the area, cutting out passing lines and pressing where appropriate.
Set Traps - When the ball is in wide areas, or the attacking team has the ball in vulnerable positions, the defending team should look to press aggressively and look to force the attacking team to make mistakes, eventually winning the ball back.
