BLOCK 1

Full backs dropping deeper to either create more space for themselves or pull the wing back tighter, leaving more space beyond. AM's to pull wider to create 3v2 or open space for DM.

Opposition management:

- Wing backs lock on, make it difficult for full back to receive

- 1 deeper midfielder, could jump onto 6 to make it harder to play through the lines

Interventions:

Walkthrough: - Show both teams how to score

Coaching process - Full back body position, weight of pass, AM runs

Concurrent - Provide detail within the practice to individuals and team as a whole

Information detail:

FB positioning - FB will drop deeper to provide themselves with a better opportunity to receive the ball, or more space for someone to receive beyond.

AM runs - AM will look to support the CB and FB that when the FB is tightly marked, they will make an in to out run into the outside channel.

Open body shape - Open shape that allows player with ball to see back foot and receiver to see both ball and space.

Pass detail - Disguise passes that may shift an opposition players body shape or position that allows us to break a line. Punching passes in to break the line.

Sets - Get behind the ball and cushion the ball, taking the pace out of it, not passing it.

Receiving - (Back foot) push ball and get hips and shoulders facing the way to play (Front foot) keep close to body and

Scanning - Scanning between touches of the ball and as it is travelling to other players, what space are we able to exploit?

Pitch geography - Using the 6 yard box and 18 yard box to understand where the half spaces are. Understand in early build up that CB and AM should be occupying positions within the half spaces that allow for both central and wide progressions. AM can make in to out runs to support FB and can support DM with sets and runs beyond midfield.

END BLOCK 1 Terminal walk through of starting with centre backs and going into GK, it may open up the 6 or force opposition centre forwards to be more central.

Organisation:

Half pitch

Red team:

Challenges, conditions and targets:

Target - Mini goals replacing wingers and striker

Challenges - Break the line when possible | High ball speed when playing around the pressure

Conditions - Set up before start | Centre backs start with ball (BLOCK 2)

Blue team:

Challenges, conditions and targets:

Target - Big goal

Challenges - When win the ball back, can you attack quickly?

Roles and responsibilities:

GK - Create depth to allow for passes back around the pressure

CB - Maintain similar distance between full back and goalkeeper to allow for quick passes around the pressure. Play on the outside shoulder of the centre forward to allow for passes into advanced midfielder and full back.

FB - Occupy positions that create space for themselves or others. Look to play forwards into AM when possible

DM - Pick up positions between the lines and look to receive and play forward quickly. Support the advanced midfielders with deeper passes

AM - Support deep midfielder, centre backs and full backs with different types of movement.

Physical load:

Manage physical load with terminal feedback, walkthroughs. Realistic distances for passes, runs.

BLOCK 2

CB start with the ball to play to GK to give ourselves multiple ways of playing.

Introduced by Aaron, lead then by Lewis. Coaching breaking the lines through the DM and AM's receiving from CB's and FB's. BLOCK 2 should be an advancement on from BLOCK 1 where the players have been coached how to break the lines by looking to play around the pressure and BLOCK 2 focuses more on playing through the pressure. Once broken the line can the FB, DM or AM's knock that ball into a mini goal quickly where in a 11v11 their wingers/ ST would be occupying.

Pitch Geography - Opposition are playing with 2STs and 2 wingbacks as well as a midfield 3 with one deep lying. Its important for the number 6 to pick up space in behind STs as the 2 8s will be occupied by the blue 2CMs. If one of the blue 8s comes and locks on to red 6 can one of the red 8s drop in to receive from a fullback or centre half, picking up a position between the a blue ST and blue wingback. 3 midfield players shouldn’t all drop deep to break the lines as it can kill the space, balance is still needed.

Interventions -

Coaching Process on when the ball should be played into the six, the position the six should pick ball up on the half turn ,body position should be able to see player they are receiving from and player passing to.

Fly By - Individual positive reinforcement or next time could you do this. For example if a centre half is struggling to play the ball into the six, bring him out slightly wider so he’s not as narrow. Coach the technique of punching the ball into the six so it dosen’t get intercepted and aim for their back foot.

Roles and Responsibilities:

GK- Role of goalkeeper within the practice is use CBs and move quickly, no reason why GK can’t split the lines if it’s on and skip the back 4. With reds having an extra player (the keeper) it’s important the keeper is used and is playing almost like pivot to shift the ball from one side to another. Keepers in this era need to be good at using feet and spreading the play. If the opposition play really high and pin us in the GK could revert to playing over straight into the mini goals but only on an odd occasion, due to pitch size and area working in.

2 CBS- Role is a crucial role and need to have good decision making. Picking the ball up they need to make sure they are wide and not narrow to allow for the six to pick it up centrally. They need to decide if they play into fullbacks feet or behind opposition wingback for fullback to run onto. Can the CBs on both sides be useful in attack and provide a pivot to go back to if the attack down one side becomes congested. Technical information ,confidence and timing of when to play that split pass, weight of pass into player receiving the ball, positional awareness of once fullbacks or midfielders have it are they creating an option to come back.

2 Fullbacks- Drop in and create space for themselves to pick ball up from centre half’s or do they go beyond and pick up the pocket of space in behind the wingbacks, even a sacrificial run will drag the wingback out opening up space for 8 or 6 to play in. Bounce passes between centre half’s and 6 will allow fullbacks to spin the wingback. If wingbacks are locking on to our fullbacks can the fullback be intelligent and communicate to keeper to put one in the area behind wingback to either go straight into goal or a midfielder to run onto.

6- Pick the ball up between 2 centre half’s and look to play forwards to 8s or on rushing fullbacks. Drop deep between 2 centre half’s at times to drag one of their midfielders out allowing for 8s to play in more room. When 6 picks the ball up first thought should be can I find a mini goal quickly, the line has been broken by my teammates at the back, can I now look to do the same through the 3 in midfield. Body position needs to be spot on to play forward, may swap with fullbacks if they drift inside to pick the ball up as this keeps opposition players moving and reduces the compactness of their shape.

2 8s/ central midfield players- Highest line of attack for us in the practice, last piece of the puzzle really important that they work as a pair, don’t want them both dropping deep as it will kill the space, but equally don’t want them both stretching the opposition and playing high that there is limited options for the 6 and fullbacks to play into. Drift into wide areas to create overloads, if the fullback gets it they may knock it in to the 8 who does a little reverse pass into the wide mini goal. Try to play with mini goals in sight back should never really be to goal unless they are playing a quick bounce pass.

BLOCK 3

Players will look to take their understanding from the previous two blocks into the final block by challenging the opposition to vary their pressing style.

Opposition management:

- Allow for varied pressing style, manage to ensure it still causes problems.

- May set traps on certain player

Interventions:

Walkthrough: - Walk team through ways to beat the press throughout the block

Coaching process - Observe the issue, bring it back, coach it and play live to allow for the learning opportunity

Concurrent - Provide detail within the practice to individuals and team as a whole

Information detail:

FB positioning - The FB positioning will depend on the pressing players position, if they are higher, the FB may drop deeper to open passing lanes into an AM run or a pass into the 'winger'

DM role - The DM must recognise when they are playing in between the lines, understanding when the opposition centre forwards have pressed and the midfielders are occupied, they need to find space to receive the ball and get the team forward. If they are not playing between the lines as they are being marked tightly, they should look to be in a position to receive safe side from GK, CB, FB or AM.

Organisation:

Half pitch

Red team:

Challenges, conditions and targets:

Target - Mini goals replacing wingers and striker

Challenges - Can you move the ball quickly through or around the oppositions pressure, playing into the mini goals as soon as possible as they represent a front 3 vs back 3.

Conditions - Set up before start

Blue team:

Challenges, conditions and targets:

Target - Big goal

Challenges - Can you vary your pressing style as a team? Set traps, go man for man or reduce the space in behind?
