Passing & Receiving (15 mins)

Objective: Prepare players for attacking session in 3v2 situations.

Area: Divide quarter of the field in half and get two grids going at the same time. No more than 6 players for each exercise.

Activity: Start with figure 1 and then progress to figures 2 and 3.

In FIG 1, Player A plays to Player B, A follows his pass. B receives across his body and plays to C, B follows his pass. C receives across body and plays to A, C follows his pass. Repeat. Go 5 times counter clockwise, then 5 times clockwise.

In FIG 2, A plays to B. A supports ball and B plays back to A who plays into a spinning B. B then repeats process with C. Always follow your pass.

In FIG 3, A plays to B who plays back to A who plays directly to C supported by B who plays directly to A and repeat.

Coaching Points: Passing should be sharp and accurate. Need to set a good example for the rest of training. Players should be checking shoulders. Cones are here as guides, teach players to check away, check back. Make sure players are reading verbal and non verbal clues. Players receiving the ball should arrive as the ball arrives not be standing as the ball gets into their feet. Make sure everyone is technically proficient.

Again, try to get them to game speed as quickly as possible.

3v1 to Small Goals w/trailing defender (15 mins)

Objective: Develop decision making skills in a 3v2 situation

Area: 1/4 of Campton indoor field

Activity: Divide into Red and Navy. In above diagram, Navy is attacking while reds defend. Red defender will start the play by trying to play a ball on the ground to their player on the other end line. Navy will intercept and start attack. As soon as navy intercepts, red target can come to help defend from behind. Player 1 should drive at player D. Players 2 and 3 should decide whether their run should be supporting run or penetrating run. If D wins the ball, attack the two mini goals. Play for 4 minutes at high intensity, then change sides.

Coaching points: Passing and receiving techniques. Check your shoulders with defender coming from behind. If play stalls going forward, can we pull ball back, get shape again and find space to attack again. Coaches should coach offside. Can we take advantage of the one defender? What kind of runs should be made in relation to the ball? Can we make good decisions? Coach in the moment and do you best to let the game flow letting players experiment with what works and doesn't.

3v2 Goal Counter Goal (20 mins)

Objective: Develop decision making skills in a 3v2 situation

Area: 1/4 of Campton indoor field

Activity: Divide into Red and Navy. In above diagram, Navy is attacking while reds defend then reds attack and navy defends. Play starts when navy forward checks to ball and ball is played into his feet. As soon as pass is made, defenders step out to pressure. Targets (T) should either turn or set the ball for a supporting midfield player. If defending team wins the ball, they can go straight to goal or they can make it 3v3 by playing a supporting player. Situation is over when goal is scored, ball goes into touch or over the endline.

Coaching Points: Passing and receiving technique. All players should check shoulders when receiving the ball. Movement off the ball is key here, so timing of runs, angle of runs, and creativity of runs is important to coach. Focus on the off ball movement, should it be a supporting run or penetrating run? Can the midfielders go past the ball that initially goes into the target forward? Can we develop 3 man combinations out of this situation? Coach the moment of transition when we first lose the ball- how does our defensive shape look and are we in position to press and win ball back right away? Make sure they know offside rule is on. Coach in the flow and encourage creativity in creating space for themselves and others. Keep score and play rounds of 4-5 minutes.
