Description

Varsity Girls' Soccer (U17) 2-hour practice. This session will focus on conditioning and decision-making. I like to train decision-making and conditioning at the same time. This is because I want my players to be able to make good decisions, even when they're exhausted. When a player is exhausted, they do not rise to the level of their talent, they fall to the level of their training. So, their training in terms of decision-making has to be at a high level.

Warmup passes (10 mins)

Fast-pace Passing Warm-up (10 mins)

 

 

Warming up with fast pace passing.

Setup and instructions:

  • Passers are 10 yards apart (progress to 20)
  • Two-touch pass (progress to one-touch)
    • Stay with the same color and run (progress to sprint) to the back of the line (passer follows the pass)
    • Repeat for 5 minutes
    • Two sets of 5 minutes (first half: original drill. second half: progressions) a total of 10 minutes.

Focus: warm-up, focus, passing, ball control, speed.

Zoned Rondo (20 mins)

4v4 zoned pressure rondo.

Setup and Instruction:

  • 4 teams of 4 + 2 target players or goalkeepers for 20 total minutes. 
  • Only 2 teams play at a time, rotating after 3 points are scored.
  • Place a target player or goalkeeper at both ends and play 4v4 in the middle. Start with a pass from a target man to a player who enters the end zone to collect it. Each team tries to move the ball from one end to the other, playing it to a runner in the end zone who scores by passing to the target.
    • Defenders should read passes and also communicate with their teammates to determine if they can press or if they need to hold.
  • Defenders will attempt to steal the ball or force a mistake and take advantage with a quick counterattack.
  • The offense will look to make 5 passes before trying to make a pass to the target man
  • One point for making a pass to your target man from inside the shaded area.
  • Defensive decision-making (when to press) and offensive decision-making (making the right pass, looking for passing lanes.)
  • (the team that isn't playing will be performing a 3v1 rondo until it is their turn to rotate into the session)

Focus: Mimic an attacking high press against a team playing out from the back. Working together to determine an ideal time to press together. Try to press together on bad passes, sloppy first touches, or players taking too long on the ball. The offense should work to make good decisions in terms of passing and off-ball movement.

2v2 Pass-for-points (20 mins)

2v2 Passing for points. Decision-making and off-ball movement. 

 

Setup and Instruction:

  • 2v2 with each team having a target player that cannot enter the box. 

  • The goal is to pass between the cones to the target player on the outside of the box. Successfully passing to the teammate through the cones will earn a point for that team.

  • Teams can pass to their target player outside of the cones for pressure relief, but they only score a point if the pass goes through the cones to reach the target player.

  • Players can take as many touches as needed but aim for less than three.

  • Play 2v2 for 10 minutes. Progress to 3v3 for the final 10 minutes. (Total of 20 minutes)

  • Goalkeepers can be used as target players.

Focus: Accurate passing as well as coordinated off-ball movement. Utilize overlap and give-and-go runs. Receiving passes with a positive first touch. Making the right pass and finding passing lanes. Quick and correct decision-making.

4v4v4 (30 mins)

Counter-attacking, conditioning, and decision-making.

Setup and instructions:

  • Three teams of four players with two goalkeepers at either goal (full field)
  • The blue team starts with the ball and attacks the red team's goal (left)
  • If the blue team successfully scores, they receive the ball at the halfway line and attack the yellow team's goal (right)
  • If the red team successfully defends against the attack, they will quickly transition from defense to offense and attack the yellow team's goal (right)
    • The blue team now defends the left goal as the red team attacks.
    • 30 minutes at high intensity, the inactive team will serve as a rest interval, but be sure inactive players are bouncing on their toes. This should be a very physically exhausting drill, heart rate should be peaking.
Focus: Intensity, making the right pass, counterattack, final third chance creation, positive possession, conditioning, pace.

9v9 Scrimmage (30 mins)

 

9v9 full field scrimmage with 2 goalkeepers with emphasis on passing and decision making. Each half of the scrimmage and every throw-in will start with a goal kick where players MUST play out of the back. Fewer players on a full pitch will force more running and movement.

Setup and instruction:

 

  • Full-field 9v9 with 2 goalkeepers.
  • 2x15-minute halves.
  • Goals scored during the run of play count as 1.
  • Goals scored from give-and-go passes count as 2.
  • Goals scored after 15+ passes from a team count as 2.
Focus: Determining passing lanes and give-and-go opportunities. The focus should be on knowing where your teammates are for relief passes and off-ball movement to create passing lanes and give-and-go opportunities. Communicate with each other and be aware of teammates' positioning on the field. Go all out, this should be an exhausting session.

Cooldown. This is a physically demanding session, making the cooldown even more important. 

Setup and instructions:

  • full field light jog
  • jog to the center circle, circle up, and stationary stretch
  • spotlight drill
