Learning Objectives

Technical Technical
To develop technical defensive skills such as marking and tackling to help defend the switch of play
Technical Tactical
To understand how to position defensively to deal with and prevent the switch of play
Technical Physical
Specific switching play practices match real game demands and aid physical conditioning (Little & Williams, 2006)
Technical Psychological
To develop decision making skills around defending the switch of play
Technical Social
To develop social skills through the practice (Larsen, Alfermann & Christensen, 2012), such as use of team meetings

SPECIFIC (25 mins)

KEY FACTORS:

- 2 teams of 8

- Play begins with red team passing into play from their ball nest area

- Red team aims to score into the centre goal at the end of the pitch, but inbetween the post and the red cone next to it, to reduce the chance of players shooting from long range

- Blue team aims to dribble the ball or pass to a team mate in either of the 16x16m boxes, marked out by blue flat markers

- Condition from the start for the blue team - When out of possession, they must all remain within the the curved playing area marked out by the red markers

- Condition from the start for the red team - When in possession, when the ball or player with the ball enters the curved red playing area, you aren't allowed to play out of it again and must attempt to score

COACHING INTERVENTIONS:

- 1st intervention - Instruct blue team to play as 4-3-1, with the 3 acting as 3 narrow centre midfielders. Instruct the reds to play as a 4-2-2, with the wide players in the 4 acting as wingbacks moving up and down the touchline.

- 2nd intervention - Working on dealing with the switch of play with the blues. Use a walkthrough to show how blues should position themselves when the ball is high and wide with the reds (preventing pass into the middle and leaving the furthest red player free). Do the same for when the ball moves from the wide area to the red team's centre backs and is switched out to other wide area (drop deep and remain compact when with the red team centre-backs and same as previous when ball is switched to opposite wide area).

- 3rd intervention - Send both teams into team meetings to discuss how to succeed at the task. Team meetings provide important social interaction among teammates (Larsen, Alfermann & Christensen, 2012)

- Flybys can be used regularly thoroughout the session, by the coach, to encourage the blue team to play into the blue boxes quickly after regaining possession.

ORGANISATION:

- 45mx40m playing area

- One central goal, with 2 cones placed 2m inside each goal post

- Curved line of red flat markers to mark out blue team playing area

- 2 equal 16x16m boxes, marked out by blue flat markers

- Ball nest by the centre of the red teams playing end for quick restart of play

SSG (25 mins)

KEY FACTORS:

- 2 teams of 9 - 8 outfield players and one goalkeeper per team

- Play begins with either team passing into play from their ball nest area

- Both teams aim to score in their opposition's goal and get 1 point everytime they do

- If the ball leaves the field of play, the appropriate restart from a real game would take place to enhance realism e.g. throw-ins, goal kicks

- Before the beginning of this practice, remind teams to keep their same formations as the last practice. Blues = 4-3-1 and Reds = 4-2-2

COACHING INTERVENTIONS:

- 1st intervention - Now advance to working on preventing the switch of play with the blue team. Use a walkthrough to show player positioning and how we should attempt to regain the ball when the red team full-back has it, as a result of preventing the switch of play (Jones & Tranter, 1999). Use the two blue boxes to illustrate these as the areas the blue team should be aiming to win the ball back

- 2nd intervention - Issue a challenge to the blue team, once they have regained possession, can they score within 6 seconds?

- 3rd intervention - Introduce points system to enhance the competition element of the SSG. Everytime the red team switches play = 1 extra point. Every time the blue team wins the ball back in either of the blue boxes = 1 extra point

- The coach should use a driveby with the blue team striker, when necessary, to remind him about angling his press on the CB, to show the CB outside towards the wing. This gets the ball to the red full-back, where the blue team can attempt to prevent the switch of play and regain the ball

ORGANISATION:

- 45mx40m playing area

- Two central goals, with one at each end

- 2 equal 16x16m boxes, marked out by blue flat markers

- Ball nest by both goals
