4. Football actions and Principles of Play - Focusing on Defending
Clear focus on the defending football actions to include:
(1) Defending Approach:
- Fast
- Slow
- Side
- Low
Fast = quickly close the distance, Slow = slow down as you get close (2 or 3 metres from player), Side = Side on defending, hips perpendicular to the attacker with small steps, Low = Keep low, bend knees on toes, and ready for fast reaction.
N.B. The Fast Approach, u should consider the angle of approach towards ball carrier. Use the sideline as a defender and ark run slightly to push attacker wide. (avoid the X straight run). The sideline is a really reliable defender, always there to help, never goes away.
(2) When side on remember, Jab and don't Stab.
Using Front Foot is called a Jab and we want this, avoid using the back foot to stab as you will normally lung in a give the attacker an opportunity to pass.
(3) Triggers for when a Defender should Jab
- Pour Touch
- Head Down
- Tight Space

(3) If the attacker looses the ball he / she must transition
(4) Each game is 10 seconds MAX
(5) Coach blows whistle to end game and player jump to the back of queue

4. Football actions and Principles of Play - Focusing on Defending
Clear focus on the defending football actions to include:
(1) Defending As A Team / Unit:
- Who Pressurises? The person closest to the ball
- Who Covers? The second player
When the ball is moved between attackers, the cover player now turns to be the pressure player.
The Cover Player needs to understand where to go. Understanding not to put too much pressure on, understand the dangerous space he/she needs to cover. Needs to be able to judge covering both the player and the danger area.

Clear focus on the defending football actions to include:
(1) Defending As A Unit:
- Pressure ---- The person closest to the ball
- Cover --- The second player
- Balance --- The third player moves across to tighten the defense, not overall worried about the wide player, defending as a unit.
When the ball is moved between attackers, the cover player now turns to be the pressure player and 3rd player provides balance
Similar to 2v2 players need to understand how to cover the danger areas behind them.

WU Multi-directional (FOCUS ON DEFENDING)
Warm-up Multi Directional (5 to 10 mins max)
1. Function: Dribbling, Attacking and Defending warm-up with players in the square and outside the square (25m x 25m)
2. Team Task: Multidirectional warmup designed to work on player’s ball control, dribbling, movement, defending and decision making.
3. Organisation: Grid size 25m x 25m, Cones (4 red, 4 blue), 6 players (or 7) have a ball in the middle of the square, 6 players (or 7) outside the square between the red and blue cones, ready to defend and not let the Red player dribble threw their gate. The players in the middle dribbles, looks for an opening and uses his creativity and pace to dribble by the defender. Focus clearly on ball control, positioning of the defender {N.B. (1) Side-on and (2) Low}, and awareness of the attacker when dribbling (head up or head down), know when to {Jab with the nearest foot to player}. When to Jab? When Attacker has a poor touch, is looking down at ball, in a tight space. COMMUNICATE TO THE PLAYERS, ESP WHEN U SEE THEM DOING IT CORRECTLY.
4. Football Actions and Principles:
· Discipline and Patients when Defending
· Ball must be pressed and encourage Side on and Low position as defender
· Encourage Jabbing not stabbing (Nearest foot to Jab, not the back foot which is stabbing)
· Always watch the attacker's head and the ball - if poor touch, head down, or in tight space then make the move quickly
