Description

This session is designed to unlock creativity in the final third by encouraging players to take risks, combine in imaginative ways, and use disguise or individual skill to break down defensive blocks. By creating conditions that reward flair and innovation, players are challenged to problem-solve under pressure, recognise opportunities to be unpredictable and express themselves with confidence in attacking situations. The ultimate aim is to develop players who are fearless, inventive, and capable of producing decisive moments that change games.

Creativity - Final Third (10 mins)

Players: 15
Area: Half pitch (tapered)
Duration: 10 mins (2 blocks of 4 mins)
Theme: Encourage players to be creative in finding ways to score. Disguise, clever movement & combination play.

Organisation

Teams:

  • 7 attackers (2-2-3)
  • 4 defenders + 1 GK & 3 mannequins (4-2-1)
  • 1 target goal & 2 mini counter goals + 1 big goal

Set-up:

  • Attackers aim to score in the target goals.

  • Defenders win possession and counter quickly into mini-goals.

  • Ball always restarts from the blue 4 or 6.

  • Play into either 8 or 10, who must play to go one way, chose a turn of their choice and then pass to the opposite midfielder (8/10)

  • 8/10 is to then serve the ball into the wide player 7/11. The wide players must time their movement to receive the ball in the yellow zone (movement towards goal to show feet)

  • Alternative movement would be movement into yellow zone to receive in the red or blue zone.

  • Wide players are challenged to use a creative move to beat their FB. to create a shooting or crossing opportunity.

  • 9 is to make double movements within the box to deceive the defenders to create shooting opportunities.

  • Players can rotate positions after 3 attacking attempts

  • Secondary options to play disguised passes (8/10) into the 9 to combine to create with wide players (7/11) to score

Conditions / Challenges / Targets

  • Players should try to use at least 1 creative action before shooting (Chal)

    • e.g. disguise pass, overlap, wall pass, skill move, turns, bounce play, runs (double movement).

  • Targets

    • 2 points for a goal created from a dribble, skill or disguise.

    • 1 point for a regular goal.

  • Defenders are to try and score within 10 seconds (Cond)

  • One of the Blue players (4 or 6) must stay within the white zone. The other can join play. (Cond)

  • Blue (7/11) should try to receive the ball in the blue zone and take their defender on to create a shooting or crossing opportunity. (Chal)

Progressions

  • P1: Add “creative zones” (shaded areas wide or between lines). Goals only count if the ball enters the zone first. (1pt for yellow, 2 for blue & 3 for red)

  • P2: Condition that at least 1 creative action must happen before scoring (e.g. Disguise, clever movement, skills & combination play)

  • P3: Make session fully opposed.

Coaching Detail

  • On the ball: Encourage disguise (look one way, play another), risk-taking, feints, playing through tight gaps.

  • Off the ball: Timing of movement to create space for others, creative runs (decoys, double movements).

  • Decision-making: Recognise when to go alone, when to combine.

  • Mindset: Praise attempts at flair, even if they don’t work. “It’s better to try something creative and fail, than to play safe every time.”

  • Encourage freedom: “Try something new before shooting – no safe passes every time.”
