Attacking the Final Third (penetration, combinations, finishing & creating chances)
Timings: 3 x 4 min blocks (90 secs rest)
Attacking Team (Blue)
Shape: 1–4–3–3
Take Away: Two CBs + 8 remaining 8 attacking players + GK
(10, 6, 7, 9, 11, 2, 3)
Objective:
Break down the defensive block in the final third through combination play in half-spaces, wide attacks, rotations, low/high crosses, and decisive finishing.
Problem / Management for the Coach
The defending team is compact, protecting the penalty box and blocking central spaces.
The attacking team struggles to break the defensive line due to predictable movement and inefficient final-third combinations.
Defending Team (Red)
Shape: 1–4–1–4–1
Take Away: Attacking 9, 10, 11 → focus on back 4, 6, and 2 wide midfielders
(creating the defensive block responsible for protecting the box)
Objective:
Limit penetration, block central channels, prevent cutbacks, and defend crosses in the final third.
Trigger:
When 10 receives between lines
When fullbacks or wingers enter wide channels
When 6, 10, or 9 combine inside the half-spaces
Solution / Coaching Focus
Main Aim (Blue Team):
Break down a compact defensive unit by using intelligent movement, width, speed of play, and coordinated final-third patterns.
How We Attack Them
Create Variety: Combine centrally (10–9–6), attack wide, or use diagonal underlaps.
Manipulate the Block:
9 pins the CBs
7/11 stretch wide
10 operates in half-spaces
Use Rotations:
10 drops to receive & link
FB adds width or becomes 3rd man
Priority Zones:
Half-space entry for cutback
Opposite winger arriving at back post
9 attacking front zone
End Product:
Low driven crosses
Cutbacks
Quick combinations into box
Diagonal passes to isolate 1v1
What If Scenarios
What if the defensive team stays very compact centrally?
What if they defend wide areas aggressively?
What if the defending team drops too deep?
Tactical Solution
Maintain width and depth at all times.
Use quick combinations to unbalance defenders (1–2s, third man runs).
Create wide 2v1s to enter the box.
Attack the front zone, penalty spot zone, and back post with coordinated movements.
Control tempo: slow to draw defenders, fast to penetrate.
Vary the attack: wide - inside, inside - wide.
Technical Solution
10:
Receive between lines on the half-turn.
Combine with 9 or slide balls wide into space.
9:
Pin CBs; stay central for cutbacks; finish in front zone.
7/11:
Stay wide initially; then attack half-space or back post.
Deliver accurate low crosses or cutbacks.
Passing / Finishing:
Crisp, quick combinations
Accurate low deliveries

Challenges for Attackers
Can you create a chance within 8 seconds after entering the final third?
Can you break the block through wide play or half-space combinations?
Can you consistently produce a dangerous finish (cutback, low cross, or shot)?
Can you find the “extra pass” to create a clear shot on goal?
Conditions/Targets
Goals from cutbacks = 2 points
Goals from wide combination (FB + W) = 2 points
Goals from central combination (10 + 9 + 6) = 2 points
Maximum 2 touches for 10/8 inside the D
If defending team wins ball and clears past halfway → 1 point
Attacking team must attempt at least one wide entry before a shot

Specific Practice (15 mins)
Coached Team (BLUE): 3-5-2, attacking the big goal.
Managed Team (RED): 5-3-2, defending compactly.
Starting Point: From Blue 6 or 10 in advanced position.
Key Point: Create and finish chances in dynamic situations — improve timing, variety, and reactions inside the box.
Blue Team:
Focus on quick switches, third-man runs, and second-phase attacking play. Encourage movement between lines (10s and striker), and constant support from wing-backs to create unpredictable attacks.
Red Team:
Defend compactly, look to block forward passes and crosses. When they regain, counter into mini-goals.
Concurrent Interventions:
Coach the Blues on variety of attacking actions — combination play, diagonal switches, and late runs into the box. Reinforce decision-making and composure when arriving in final third.
Practice Format: 6v8 (10’)
Set-Up:
Timings: 3 x 4 min blocks (90 secs rest)Blues: + 2 6s + both wing-backs + 10 + striker = 6 players.
Reds: 5 defenders + 2 midfielder + GK = 8 players (compact block).
Half-pitch, one big goal for Blues, two mini-goals for Reds.
Coach starts with 6 or 10.
First Block
Problem 1: Blues circulate well but fail to break the line — attacks become predictable.
Solution:
Encourage third-man runs from 10s or wing-backs.
Striker drops short to pull CB, opening space for others.
6s look for disguised passes into channels or half-space.
Second Block
Problem 2: Blues create chances but fail to react to rebounds and second-phase balls.
Solution:
Add second-wave support — one 6 holds, other attacks edge of box.
Opposite wing-back joins inside for second ball.
Cue: “Don’t stop until ball is cleared.”
Problem 3:The defenders do a high press.
Solution:To overcome this scenario, the CM could split and drop deep and wide to get on the ball and act like a false fullback which allows the opportunity for the pass to the winger to happen and then an overlap movement to be done to create a 2v1 on the wing which will make the defenders think where to go and pull them out of position.
Structure:
Three 4-minute blocks with short frames and walk-throughs.
Mix terminal and concurrent interventions.
Keep tempo high and realistic — constant attacking waves.
Adaptations:
- Put the attacking team on a limited amount of touches.
- Make a goals setting. For example, scoring from a cross counts as 2 goals.
Coaching Principles :- Circulate the ball quickly and play with a high tempo
- receive ball with open body position and on backfoot
- correct timing of movement into half spaces and pockets
- when attacking crosses, front post, back post and cut back options
Roles and Responsibilities :Strikers
- be threat in box by arriving early and aggressively
Midfielders- underlap wingbacks
Wingbacks
