Set up:

RED: 3-2 + GK

BLUE: 1-2-3

  • Looking to progress playing out from the back, now looking at starting with the CB/CDM, and progressing the ball through the midfield and Attacking Third.

Objectives:

Red: To stay compact as a team, look to win the ball, counter attack and score in one of the three target goals.

Blue: To use combinations or individual skills to play through, around or over the opposition and score in the score.

Width: RW (7) & LW (11) looking to stretch the pitch and play as wide as possible.

Depth: CB (5) can step into midfield whilst providing Depth if teammates need to play backwards.

Length: Striker (9) looks to play as high as possible to pin opposition CB back to create space for teammates, also looking to make penetrative runs in behind.

Look to use Width to play Around opposition:

  • LW (11) keeps the width, can receive the ball.
  • As the ball is moving the Striker (9) moves to the side where the ball is.
  • Plays a 1-2 with the LW before spinning to get into the box.
  • One of the CM makes a run to the edge of the box to be an option for a cutback.
  • LW (11) has option of playing near post, centre of the box, back post or a cut back.

Penetrating Through Central Areas (Up, Back & Through)

  • The CMs (6) & (8) can attempt to drag the opponents out of position by moving into slightly wider positions in the Left and Right Half space.
  • As there is now space left by the opposition in the central area, the CB (5), can look to be more Direct and play into the Strikers (9) feet.
  • This movement will drag the CB (Red 5) forward, leaving space in behind.
  • As this ball is moving, the CM (6) makes a run on the blindside of his marker.
  • The Striker (9) plays a set pass to the CM (6).
  • As this pattern of play is happening, the Winger on that side (7), makes an Out to In run on the blindside of the opposition Fullback (3).
  • The CM (6) plays a pass in the gap between the opposition CB and LB.
  • RW (7) should take a positive 1st touch before finishing.

Play Over the the Opposition: (In Behind)

  • In this scenario, the CM (8) and LW (11) drop deeper to look to receive, this is also creating space in behind.
  • The Striker (9) looks to exploit this space by making a run in front of the CB and then in behind the space left by the RB.
  • The CB (5) should look to play a more direct aerial ball in behind the defence into the striker, who looks to control and finish.
