Technical warm up (10 mins)

Practice Objective:

  • Technical warm up, focusing on passing and receiving - particularly striking the ball and receiving, with the intent to go play forward.

Set Up

  • 1 bag of balls
  • 6 agility poles
  • 1 cone

Practice Explanation:

  • Set up area as shown, with poles off set at diagonal intervals of 8m (adjust distance to suit group ability)
  • Arrange players on each pole as shown.
  • Player A passes ball out to player B  and follows pass. Player B receives the ball around the pole to pass to player C and follows his pass, and so on. When the ball reaches player G, they spin around the pole and run through the centre back to the starting point.
  • Continous exercise - as soon as ball reaches halfway mark, start another ball
  • Variation - after a couple of rotations, switch direction, starting from G to A - observe if players utilise their weaker foot or try to arrange their body shape to receive and play on their favoured side.

Coaching Points

  • Striking the ball - can players play a firm, accurate pass using the inside of the foot. Good ball speed and maintaining the ball's contact with the turf is key.
  • First touch - back foot receive to create an angle to play forward around the cone. If needed, players can go in and touch the pole and come out to receive on the back foot - give example. Do we shift the ball from one foot to the other, or complete in 1 motion.
  • Body Shape - are we open to receive and play in a single motion. Feint to let the ball roll across the "defender"
  • Running with the ball back to starting point - keep heads up, be aware that balls are being payed across.

Possession and Transfer game (5x3Mins/1R) (20 mins)

Practice Objective:

  • Practice aimed at progressing the ball across the field, using the central players, focusing on player movement, ability to recognise space, first touch and passing the ball. At first play unopposed, letting all players get a touch on the ball then transfer to a game scenario where scanning for the opposition comes more into play.

Set Up;
  • Area 20m x 20m
  • 1 bag of balls
  • 16 cones
  • 2 sets of bibs
  • 1 bag of balls

Practice Explanation:

  • Set up area as shown, making a small 2m square box in each corner
  • Divide players equally between each team - 2 players of each team are "locked" in  opposite corners until they receive the ball, at which point the player who passed the ball to them takes their place. They then must transfer the ball back to the opposite corner, to "unlock" the other player. There are always 2 players "locked" in corners, the objective being to break them out.
  • At first play is unopposed, so each team has its own ball, where the objective is to transfer the ball from point A to C (for the red team) or B to D (yellow team).
  • When the players are comfortable in the exercise, remove 1 teams ball. Play is now opposed, where both teams are aiming to transfer the ball to unlock their players, but also maintain possession from the other team.
  • Play for 5x3min sets/1min rest

Coaching Points;

  • Receiving the ball and scanning - are players aware of the space around them and their opposition? Check shoulder.
  • Which players thrive with the chaos in a small space?
  • Movement - can you make a movement to be an option to receive, or take an opposition player away, allowing your team more space?
  • Positive first touch into space
  • Communication - can players locked in the square help their team identify opposition players, or a route across?
  • Speed - how many break outs can we complete in a set?

3v3v3 (15 mins)

Practice Objective:

  • Exercise to simulate playing through the lines
  • 5x3mins/1minR

Set Up;

  • Set up 20mx10m area, divided into 3 equal zones
  • 1 bag of balls
  • cones to divide area
  • 3 sets of bibs

Practice Explanation:

  • Players in Zone 1 and Zone 3 must work the ball to each other back, whilst players in Zone 2 try and intercept and win the ball back. Only 1 of the players in Zone 2 may leave the zone at any one time to tray and win the ball - must always have 2 defenders in middle zone
  • Add Joker if numbers even - plays in Zone 2 with the teams transitioning the ball through the zones.
  • When Zone 2 win the ball they transition with the Zone that gave it away
  • Play is restarted by the "6" retrieving a ball from the side and playing it into either Zone 1 or 2

Coaching Points;

  • Player movement - create angles to receive or draw players out of position
  • ball speed - can players move the ball quickly
  • decision making and communication - when and who to press
  • If Joker in Zone 2 - do we need to play through the "6" - can we play directly to the zones
  • Communication - defending the middle zone, deny angles and compact to deny passing lines

SSG - SAP Vs Pathway (40 mins)

Practice Objective:

  • Small Sided Game - SAP Vs Pathway
  • To develop the skills and techniques learned in a game environment.
  • Team to lay in a 2-3-1 formation, numbers permitting
  • BPO - defending team to win the ball back as quickly as possible to regain numerical advantage
  • Encourage players to use the width of the pitch

 Set Up;

1 pitch 30m x 20m

2 x mini goals

Practice Explanation:

  • 3x9/3minR
  • Normal rules apply otherwise

Coaching points;

  • Which players are finding the free space?
  • Can we utilise the width to make the pitch bigger?
  • How quickly can we win the ball back and where can we win the ball back - can we win it back in their defensive area?
  • Do we have to play forward - can we recycle the ball using the GK?
