Game Related Practise: 2v2 + Blocker Game
This game-related practice teaches your players the roles and responsibilities of defending 2v2. Your players will learn how to angle their press to force the play away from the center of the pitch.
Set-Up
Set up the practice as seen in the above image.
First, 3 players in each group run around the goal on their right. 2 players come inside the pitch and one remains behind as a ‘blocker.
The coach feeds the ball to the first player on the pitch.
The attackers must attempt to score in either of the two small goals (1pt) or dribble through the gate (3pts). The ‘blocker’ must remain off the pitch, whatever they stand behind the attacking team cannot score in.
Key Coaching Points
Players should angle their run on approach to the ball by curving their run. This will force players away from the center of the pitch in an attempt to create a 1v1, isolating the player in the position of the ball.
In a 2v2, encourage players to be side on and low down this will ensure that they can change direction quickly if beaten. Being side-on will enable the defender to only show the attacker one way.
The closest player to the ball presses, the second player offers cover and support in behind. The second player must position themselves to screen off a forward pass but also be close enough to press the attacker should they get past the first defender. Once the ball shifts to the other attacker the defenders swap roles

Game Related Practise - Deny Time & Space
In this practice, your players will learn how to defend outnumbered in a variety of scenarios.
Set-Up
Set up the practice as seen in the above image.
Attack as quickly as possible to catch out the defender and make a quick transition to defend.
Phase 1: P1 dribbles and shoots unchallenged.
Phase 2: P1 stays active and defends against P2 (1v1).
Phase 3; P1 P2 stays active, P3 attacks to create 2v1.
Phase 4; P1, P2, P3 stat active. P4 now attacks to create the 2v2.
Always attack the goal that you’re facing
Key Coaching Points
The defender must react immediately following their shot and attempt to get close and put pressure on the attacker.
Encourage players to angle their run-on approach to the ball in an attempt to show the attacker away from the goal and screen off forward passes to their teammate.
The closest player to the ball must apply pressure with the 2nd player providing depth and cover. The 2nd player must be close enough to provide cover if the first player is beaten but also able to get across to the second attacker should the ball be played square.

Conditioned Game - Deny Time & Space
This conditioned game teaches your players how to deal with an overload, developing their understanding and ability to deny time and space after a turnover in possession
Set-Up
Set up the practice as seen in the above image.
4v4 small-sided games, kick-ins from the side.
If a player scores a goal, the opposing team restarts the game straight away by taking one of the balls from the halfway line.
The player who scored the goal must replace the ball that has been taken from the cone with the ball they scored with.
Key Learning Objectives
The player who has scored must collect the ball as quickly as possible and make a quick recovery run, replacing the empty cone and then making their way back into the pitch to help defend.
The player who is pressing the ball must angle their run in an attempt to show the defender away from the centre of the pitch and guide them into a wide area. Once close they must also angle their body to keep the defender going in that direction and not allow them to come back inside or pass forward.
The player defending must be able to react quickly to a change of direction from the attackers by keeping the weight on the balls of their feet. They must move their feet quickly to maintain an angled body shape and continue to force the attacker away from the center of the pitch.
The closest player to the ball must apply pressure with the 2nd player providing depth and cover. The 2nd player must be close enough to provide cover if the first player is beaten but also able to get across to the second attacker should the ball be played square.
