A 20-minute session for the Coaching Process with Mike on a Tuesday at Curzon Ashden.
Session Topic: Solving Problems/ Playing through the thirds
Number of players: 16 in total (NO Goalkeepers)
This session is mainly focused around the number 9... he will be the player with a vast amount of problems and we are looking to increase his positive decision making by playing a 3vs1. How can he lose his markers and whether or not he is being marked will result in a 'set' or spin-off and shoot.
Middle thirds are also important as we need to create the space within the middle third to allow us to play into our striker and release as shot. It will be a match for match in the middle, 4vs4 and we look at how we can lose our markers along with retention of the ball. Coach one team and set a diamond formation to get the underlining philosophy traits. Long and wide. Look for rotations of positions in the middle and also the support of defence also.

See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
To get the players actively thinking, the defenders can now dribble with the ball into the middle third to draw the opposition and create space. Ask the players questions around this to check for their understanding.
"SHOW ME A TRICK"
Get the players to try new things to see how we can beat an opponent.
If the striker is played into a teammate of the middle third can go and support and become part of the attack (doesn't have to be the player that played the pass) to create a 3vs 2.
Coaching progressions:
- Introduce defender and strikers as previously mentioned.
- Can you play the longest pass?
- How can we make it harder for the other team?
Overloads, releasing shot, breaking defence lines
Although the focus is on retention of the ball, can players not be afraid of losing the ball, trying new things to beat an opponent. Support play and how we regain possession back can come in after.
Progression into a game would be made if the session were longer with an emphasis on positions and roles and responsibilities.

Arrival/ Intro
There will be balls around the area, if the ball goes out of play, restart with pass/dribble.
Teams are locked into their thirds, a 4vs4 in the middle third and a 3 vs 1 in each end zones. The way the team's score, to begin with, is by the striker setting back into the middle third and shots come from the midfielders.
Coaching Points:
Middle Third:
- Can you support teammates... Can you show me your movement?
- Can you create space to play into the striker... Where do we need the space?
- Stretch and lengthen the area... How and why should we look to 'stretch' the pitch?
