Description

Principle & Phase Focus:

In Possession (IP) - Keep Phase - We must retain possession of the ball. Highly Skilled Action: Passing.

Out of Possession (OOP) - Deny Phase - Stop their go forward by denying time and space. Highly Skilled Action: Intercepting.

WARM UP:

Coaching points for passing:

Focus on the push pass as much as possible, keeping STICK ON BALL. We want to avoid players taking their stick off the ball when passing on the move in a game.

Pass FOREHAND to FOREHAND.

To pass: Knees bent, low body position, flat stick, sideways body position to pass.

To receive: At least two touches - control and pass. Don't be tempted to bat the ball back, it's not tennis!

Reminder of overall IP and OOP principles:

IP: The best option to go forward and score.

OOP: The best option to stop their go forward and win the ball back.

Moving the Ball - Passing & Receiving

Focus on different ways to pass and receive.

x20 of each pass with a partner.

1. 5m apart. Fast push pass. Two touch - receive with control and pass. Knees bent, low body position, flat stick, sideways body position to pass.

2. 10m apart. Push pass, medium pace. First touch carries the ball to the left, drag to the right, pass back to partner.

3. 20m apart. Player receiving moves behind the cone to start. Push or slap pass, medium pace. As the ball is passed, the receiver sprints forward to receive and carry forward with their first touch. Allow the receiver to reset behind the cone after each turn. Switch places every 5 passes.

4. Bouncing ball. Not lifted above shin height. Make sure the player passing has their stick on the ball to keep the pass under control. To receive, upright stick.

5. Passing off left foot. Passing on the move, alongside your partner, moving up the pitch. Pass off the left foot.

6. Passing off right foot. Passing on the move, alongside your partner, moving up the pitch. Pass off the right foot.

Precise passing after dribbling

  • Groups of eight - two players on each corner.
  • Two balls, starting at opposite corners of the square.
  • Players with the ball start to dribble at the same time.
  • When they get to the cone in the centre they must pass the ball to the left with their forehand, through the cone goal.
  • They carry on to run straight to the opposite unoccupied goal in front of them.
  • Once their partner controls the ball behind the cone goal, they perform the next rep.
  • The first pair to score 10 goals, wins.

VARIATION:

The player receiving the ball has to return the ball immediately into the path of their partner who is running to the unoccupied goal. After 10 passes, both players change roles.

COACHING POINTS:

  • Practice passing the ball with the left foot forward, and with the right foot forward.
  • Try not to reduce the running speed too much when passing.

Passing Left & Right

  • Player 1 feeds the ball forward to player 2.
  • As the ball is passed, players 3 and 4 need to communicate by looking at each other: one should move to a ready position to receive the ball and the other should be standing up straight, not looking ready for a pass.
  • Player 2 should pre-scan as they receive the ball so they know who they should pass to. Help them understand how to move their feet and where their first touch should be to pass left or right.
  • Player 3 or 4 passes back to the feeder.
  • 5 passes and rotate players around.
Progression
  • As soon as player 1 has passed the ball, they move quickly to mark player 3 or 4.
  • The action of player 1 will determine where player 2 passes to. Ie, pass to the free player!

16 Hit Outs

  • Recap rules of 16 hit out - when it is awarded, who takes it, where it is taken from.
  • 4 vs 2 (or 5 vs 2, or 5 vs 3 - not too many players and always an overload for the side taking the hit out).
  • Help players understand positioning to provide options for the centre back to play the ball out of defence.
  • Key options should be left and right back, creating a saucer shape.
  • Set a target for the team taking the 16 (eg. goals at either side to encourage width).
  • Set a target for the team pressing the 16 (eg. goal / cones / line behind the player taking the 16).
  • Play the 16 out until a goal is scored, or the ball goes out of play.
  • Rotate players so that everyone has a chance to understand different positions.
  • Swap players between teams so that everyone attacks and defends.

End Zone

  • Each team is aiming to get the ball to their teammate in the end zone.
  • Only one player can be in an end zone at a time. They can move anywhere within that end zone.
  • Keep rotating the players in the end zones.
