SESSION - SUPPORTING THE FORWARD PASS
The more a team can get the ball forward and the more players a team can get forward, the better the chance of scoring. Plus, if they lose possession they can press the opposition high up the field and win it back as they have numbers up there. This session works on making good forward passes and getting support as the ball moves forward.
Warm Up Rondo
PURPOSE:
•Win the ball and then help your team mates keep good possession.
SET UP:
•8 to 20 Players. Adjust the size of the circles accordingly.
•10 Cones or Discs
•Circular area
•15 minutes
The Practice.
1.Half the players in one circle with the other half in another circle with a 30 yard gap between, and they should number themselves.
2. Number One from each team stand in the middle of the oppositions circle in preparation to win the ball.
3.Once play starts teams pass the ball trying to keep it off the opposition player/s. As soon as the opposition player/s win the ball they sprint to their circle and tag a team mate (they should remember whom the next number is) who sprints to the other circle to do the same.
4.First team to get all their players to win possession and get back to their circle wins

Technical First Touch must be good when receiving the ball. Weight of the pass must be good. |
|
Tactical When pressing in numbers, one defender should try to close the ball down, the other defender(s) should try to cut the passing lines |
|
Physical Defenders should try to press with speed and pace, and get touch tight. Team in possesion should try to find space and create angles of support. When protecting the ball, be strong, try not to panic when under possesion, remember - you can`t pass through players. |
|
Psychological Defenders should try to anticipate the pass and dictate where the pass is going to by using body shape and eyes |
|
Social Both teams must communicate, using body shape, eyes and verbal signals. |
PURPOSE:
• Improving passing in tight areas & improving the press.
SET UP:
• 10 Players (alternatively 6,8 or 12 players)
• 8 Cones• 20x20 yard area
• 15 Minutes
THE DRILL:
1. Two teams of 5 players in each half.
2. The ball begins with the Blue team who attempt to pass and maintain possession.
3. Once the first pass is made, one player from the Red team (Red #1 in this example) can press (creating a 5v1) and attempt to win the ball.
4. Every 3 passes equal a goal and after each goal another player from the Red team may enter to support the press (ie 5v2 once 3 passes [a goal] are made, 5v3 once 6 passes [2 goals] are made).
5. If the defenders win possession, they pass back into their waiting team mates in the opposite half and start passing and Blue send a player in to create a 5v1, ensuring that a player in blue is ready to receive the ball.
KEY POINTS:
• Quality and variety of the pass.
• Split the defenders with the pass if possible.
