    1 v 1 & 2 v 2

    Method:

    • Coach shouts 'GO' and players run around corner to opposite corners and into the middle to play 1v1
    • Progress it to 2 v 2
    • If you want players to do more running, make pitch bigger
    • Players play until one scores. Idea is to shoot as early as possible. This replicates player being able make space to pass

    Coaching Points:

    • Good speed & work rate
    • Attacking - use skills, step overs/scissors/cruyf turns etc to beat player 1v1
    • Quickly make space to sore as early as possible
    • Defensively - close space quickly. Get side on, show player down the line. Take small steps and slow down as they get closer. Block passing late to the goal
    • In 2 v 2, good communication, verbal & non verbal. Scanning. Quick runs. Play into space

    Defending Corners

    Method:

    • Defending on numbers and quality, get one of the players to cross balls or coach can do it
    • Arrange player positions BEFORE the match, so everyone knows their job
    • Football tennis earlier in the session will highlight players who are not comfortable heading the ball
    • Players have to show aggression and physicality with strong desire to stop goal scoring opportunities

    Coaching Points:

    • Players must be "TOUCH TIGHT". So close enough they can physically touch the opposition player they are marking
    • Body shape should be open, so they can see where ball is coming from and the player they are marking
    • Players should be "ball side", to stop attackers getting across or infront of them. So slightly on the side of where the ball is being taken
    • Use arms, place them around player, so then they can feel when attacking is trying to make runs
    • Players heading ball clear should try head out to wing - ideally opposite wing to where corner taker is

Hole Player - Rather than putting a player on the front post, put player in the 'hole'. Roughly 1 step past front post and 2 steps from back line. Open body shape. Player should be strong header and brave, to stop balls coming in. Need to be able to shift feet quickly to stop any balls passing between them and bye line. This player is responsible for going out to corner taker if there is 2 out there. If they have 2, we need to have 2, so make sure 2nd player to go out knows their role. This player should also help organise and spot any free opposition players
