6(+2) v 6(+2) Defensive Transition
Organization: 35 x 35 Yards; 5v5 in the middle with both teams in 2-2-1 formation. Both teams have two wingers positioned outside at the sides (7&11).
Rules:
1. Play starts with keeper and play normal 5v5 game. When team loses the ball, aim is to condense the space in the centre and block direct path to goal (forcing play wide).
2. Team in transition from defense to offense has numerical advantage with ability to use two wide players.
3. Restart always begins with team that just finished the attack.
Progressions:
1. In transition from defense to attack, team must finish their attack within 8-12 seconds.
2. If team in transition from attack to defense recover the ball within 6 seconds = 1 point
3. Two outside players can both go inside area for a transition to attack. They can score.
Coaching Points:
1) Light Switch Transition (immediate reaction and Anticipation)
- Pressure ball carrier & surrounding space in width and depth
- initial objective: win the ball within 6 seconds (offensive and middle third)
- if first objective is not possible, then make sure we get behind in our defensive shape and prevent penetration.
