This session includes animated drill(s) Save Image: Hockey Session Plan Drill (Colour): Passing round the square Create Video:

Passing round the square (10 mins)

3 players in a square

Ball moves around the outside of the square and players must move to the free cone to keep the ball moving continuously.

Start with Forehand receives. Drill focuses on players having Left and Right options.

Coaching points

- Side on receive (left should pointing to the passer)

- Soft hands (Cushion the ball rather than stop, imagine the stick slowing the ball down from left foot to right)

- Early footwork (Get in position early to focus on the ball)

Progression

- Go Opposite way- Clockwise with ball

- Add a defender who can incept the ball. Attackers can go either direction.

3v1 Rondo (10 mins)

Description:

  • Use the box from Passing drill
  • One defender and three attackers in circle.
  • 3v1 possession
  • If a defender wins the ball they swap with player who lost possession
  • Attacker in middle swaps out with another attacker after a period, if they have been in for too long

Coaching points:

  • STAY OUTSIDE DEFENDER'S REACH: When offering a pass make sure you stay outside the reach of defender. WHY? So the ball won't be intercepted.
  • Move outside reach of stick and create a passing angle.

What does good look like?

  • Players stay outside reach of defender when offering a pass.

Kabaddi game (20 mins)

Description:

  • Two boxes side by side. Five players in each box. One team starts with the ball and the other sends one player across to try and win the ball.
  • The five must keep possession off the one. If the one wins it or the five make 10 passes, the ball is passed to the other side and the now out of possession team sends one player across to win it back.
  • The drill repeats.
  • Progression: Defending team can send two players across. Then 3 players.
Coaching points:
  • What actions can you take on a hockey pitch: pass or dribble

  • KNOW YOUR NEXT ACTION: Know what you are going to do before you receive the ball. WHY? Because if you don't know what you are going to do, you will hesitate and defenders will tackle you.
What does good look like?
  • Players know their next action
  • Players make quick decisions

6v3 Overload at Goal (20 mins)

Description:

  • Quarter pitch split into thirds. With a goal at one end.
  • Two attackers start in each quarter. One defender starts in each quarter.
  • An attacker in first quarter plays uncontested pass to fellow attacker who is standing next to defender. The ball is passed straight back.
  • From this point all players in drill are live and can go anywhere in quarter. It is a 6v3 at goal.
  • If defenders win the ball they must dribble it over one of the sidelines. At this point attackers must try and win the ball back, if they do they continue to attack.
  • All fouls are blown up, with the game stopped and free hits played.
  • If the ball goes out or a goal is scored, the exercise is finished. At this point each attacking pair moves up a third, with pair at top coming back to start. Defenders do sets of three then swap out.

SET UP

  • Each team has two gates to score into.
  • Score by making a pass to your teammate in the gate. Keep rotating the players in the gates.
  • If you score, keep possession of the ball.
  • Swap goals halfway through the activity so that each team scores on different sides of the pitch.
What do you need to focus on when playing in a small space?
