Working the ball in the centre of the pitch (20 mins)

Set Up:

  • Players: 10-12
  • Grid size: 20m x 20m

Explanation:

  • Players will be split into 2 teams, with one ball between each team.
  • Each team must look to take their ball from one side of the area to the other.
  • Players cannot be in the same quarter as one of their teammates, thus players must move to receive the ball.
  • Once a player has passed the ball to one of their teammates, they should look to move into the quarter not containing anyone from the same team before showing to receive.

Progression:

  • Players can travel with the ball from one quarter to another. Therefore, a teammate in the same quarter must move into another before they can receive.
  • Players can be limited to 2 touch maximum to increase the tempo of the drill

Key Coaching Points:

  • Can you take your first touch away from the opponent
  • Can you to identify where the space, the ball and your teammates are
  • Can you position yourself to see the ball and the whole field
  • Can you move to provide options for the player looking to play forward
  • Can you play a first-time pass to transfer the ball quickly
