Theme
defend from the front
Principles
(1) Delay (2) Compactness (3) Depth
Key Words/Phrase
(1) Press - move towards the ball carrier, pressure the ball carrier
(2) Drop - move closer to own goal (goal side), between ball carrier or check and own goal
(3) Get together - be compact with team, in a unit, or in a pair; close enough together that opposition cannot play between players
(4) Go together - if one player moves forward to pressure the ball carrier can the entire team move together to prevent gaps from opening behind the player pressuring the ball carrier
(5) Drive - when in possession of the ball dribble forward with pace into space or at a defender to beat them 1v1
Guided Questions
(1) how close do we (DO) need to be together side to side
(2) how close does one need to be to support pressure on the ball
(3) who is the least dangerous player for the opposition
(4) when can we press the ball?
(5) when can we drop off / away from the ball?
Learning Outcomes
(1) How to support first defender - how the second defender should move with the player closest to the ball as they close down the ball carrier
(2) Identify roles DO - players understand their roles in defensive organization
(3) Identify threats - players are able to identify threats when in defensive organization
(4) cues to press the ball - when to close down the ball carries; if the ball carrier doesn't have control of the ball, if the ball carriers head is down, if the ball is bouncing, as the ball is traveling to a player receiving the ball, if the ball carrier's back is turned to their own goal
(5) cues to drop off - when to move towards own goal to eliminate space; if the ball carrier has time on the ball and lift their head to play a longer / through pass
(6) how to eliminate space - to get compact / numerical advantage around the ball to eliminate space
(7) what to do when the ball is won - how to counter attack and quickly attack gaps left in opposition before they are able to transition to their defensive organization

Organization: GK & 2V2+1. GK work with two defenders to play the ball into MF. Ball must be played along the ground into MF / target player between one of the three gates (red cones / blue line) for a point. The target player must move to support through the three gates. If the attacking players win the ball they go score for a point. When the target player receives a pass he becomes an attacking player and joins / passes to the attackers and tries to score. Each time the defenders pass into the target they get a point.
Alternate Organization: If you do not have a large goal and GK, change the large goal for a PUG and the GK for another defender.
Objective: Work as a pair to always pressure the ball carrier and screen out a forward pass.
Competition: Teams compete for 3-minutes. Which team can get the most points in 3-minutes.

Each time the defenders pass into the target they get a point.
Objective: Work as a pair to always pressure the ball carrier and screen out a forward pass.
