General notes:
Defending Block, focus defenders. Best time to delay / tackle
Aims and objectives:
Can the defenders delay the attackers and support each other. When is the best time to make a tackle and then if they win the ball they have to try and make a run up the pitch and pass into the mini goal
Organisation and setup:
Setup using half a pitch, create two defending zones with flat markers or cones with one defender locked into each zone. One coach stands at the half way line with balls and a mini goal. Two lines of attckers either side of the mini goal. The coach passes the ball to an attacker and he / she attacks with a partner from the other side. Attackers go to score into the largeg goals past the GK, getting past the defenders first - either dribbling or pssing
Coaching factors and outcomes:
Body position, side on, on their toes with a low centre of gravity with legs bent so they can manouvre quickly.
Help them to learn to get into a good body position that stops them diving in to tackles and delay attackers - when is the best time to tackle, when is the best time to delay.
Should I try and send the attacker inside or outside
Second defender position - how to support
GK position - how to help and support the defenders - talk to them, help them understand where the attackers are.
Adaption:
Allow zone 1 defender to drop into zone 2
Change zone 2 to have 2 defenders
Add fixed wingers that attackers must pass to
Coaching points#1
- when to tackle when to delay
- Low centre of gravity
- Bend kness
- stand on toes
Coaching points#2
- Look for the right time to steal ball
- change front foot from left to right
- Should I take the attacker inside or outside
- When I win the ball how quickly can I get to the mini goal
- When I pass to the mini goal - side of foot, look for accuracy not power

General notes:
Defending Block, focus on coaching defenders - manage attackers
Aims and objectives:
Put the coaching points into practice, the focus is on defending
Organisation and setup:
Setup a full size match and let them play. Encourage all the coaching points from the practice.
Adaption:
Set challeneges for the players
When our team does not have the ball
- defender: don't let the other teams player get in between you and your goal keeper
- midfielder: Run back quickly to help your defender
- attacker: can I stand in space so we can attacker quickly when we win the ball back
Coaching points#1
- Close down the attacker quickly
- Body shape and position
- Delay attackers so that your teamates can come back and help
- Delay attackers and look for the right time to make a tackle
Coaching points#2
- Can they show them to a side line, away from the goal
- Can they show the attacker onto their weaker foot
- When we win the ball can we make quick forward passes

Attackers versus defenders (10 mins)
General notes:
Defending Block, focus on defenders
Aims and objectives:
Arrival activity, put bibs on players as they arrive and put them in the square. Four mini goals, one at each corner. Attackers dribble the ball keeping close contact, defender tries to steal the ball and can score a point buy passing into one of the goals
Organisation and setup:
Setup an area that creates lots of space for the players, don't be afraid to alter the sixe if necessary during the practice. One team of attackers have a ball each and must dribble around the area keeping the ball close and under control. The defenders must steal the ball from the attackers and pass the ball into one of the mini goals to score a point. Swap defenders and attackers so everyone has the chance to play in each position.
Coaching factors and outcomes:
Focus on the defending team. When is the best time to delay? When is the best time to tackle? Can the defenders steal the ball, keep it under control and pass into the mini goal? Look at body position, side on weight onto back foot, delay and wait for the attacker to make a mistake. Can they show them to the touch line. When the steal the ball, can they look up and make a controlled pass using the side of their foot
Adaption:
Add coloured cones in the goals and give the goals different points values - can they dribble to the higher scoring goal, or is it too dangerous and should thet go for the easier goal.
Put defenders into pairs and get them to work as a team
Put the attackers into pairs, when is the best time to pass / dribble
Swap goals for players - defenders must try and pass the ball out and recieve it back to get a point
Coaching points#1
- Body shape of defenders - side on, low centre of gravity, bend knees, stay on toes
- delay and look for the best time to tackle
- Don't dive in to tackle
Coaching points#2
- Steal the ball, don't kick it out
- Can the defender keep hold of the ball until the right time to pass into goal
- Use the side of the foot to pass into goal - these are not shots, they are passes
