Team Task:

Player Tasks:

Player closest to ball carrier immediately press the ball to deny oppostion time and space

Mark support players or position in space between opponents

Press opposition collectively as a unit in direction that presents the best opportunity to win the ball

Keep defence compact

Communicate with team from behind

Coaches Cues:

"Player closest to the ball carrier immediately press the ball when we lose it. Use speed and approach from ball side to get within tackling distance or range to win the ball on opponents touch or force mistake or prevent / intercept pass. Antcipate passes and time press to arrive at time of ball to allow immediate pressure"

"Mark opponents tight to discourage passes between. If too far away from ball, move to position in space to prevent forward pass"

Attacking and middle 3rd players press opposition collectively towards small areas where there is better opportunity to win the ball. During collective press, keep distances between each other relatively short to reduce opponents ability to penetrate through our defensive lines"

"Make the field smaller by compacting our defence. If opponent plays negative pass step up to maintain short distances between defenders"

"Players communicate with team from behind when to press ball and when to drop off and block passing channels"

Team Task:

Prevent opposition from playing forward and win the ball back as soon as possible in attacking 3rd.

#9 and 10 work together to prevent change in point of attack through opposition #3, 4 or 6 whilst our #6/8 block passing channels

#6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 must react to winning ball and get the ball and players into forward positions asap

Coaches Cues:

"If you are the nearest player apply immediate pressure to the GK, but only if you believe you can win the ball, otherwise hold in space to prevent forward pass"

"When pressing GK anticipate and bend run into passing channel to prevent or intercept return pass from GK to back four player"

"If either opposition CD has ball, either #9/10 whoever is nearest press the ball from inside to force player towards side line or if able, press from outside to encourage square ball across goal to opposite CD. Player not pressing drop into space centrally to block forward pass or intercept"

"If #9/10 presses #3 and the non pressing player drops in centrally, #7 track in or if #9/10 presses #4 and non pressing player drops #11 tracks in to compress defence".

"To prevent opposition playing out centrally through #3, 4 or 6, both #9 and 10 position 50/50 whilst #6/8 block passing channels behind to discourage forward pass"

"Direct pressure from inside to force WD toward sideline or if already in wide position press from outside to encourage negative pass but if unable to apply early pressure, drop into position in space to prevent forward pass"

"React upon winning possession with quick forward pass preferrably behind defenders if possible and movement of players into forward positions to create goal scoring opportunities"
